It is necessary to go on an organised visit to the catacombs but they are very regular. I didn't expect such a labyrith of tunnels, spaces for the dead etc. It was an impressive tour with a good guide. The frescos of St Paul and St Peter were amazing.

The 3 ladies at the reception were busy with themselves. We had the impression to disturb as a tourist. The guidance was very monotonous and lasted only 35 minutes. Questions were not really wanted. Photography not allowed. Pity to present such an interesting place so bad. One of our worst guides ever, and we travel regularly ! Pity for syracuse

It was an 8 euro tour. It was guided in Italian then English but I struggled with her English. Photos were not allowed in the catacombs which was a shame. I'm not sure of the reason. The remains are long gone, so I doubt it's a respect issue. Perhaps they don't want people lagging behind. It was interesting and for... More

It is well worth getting here before the tour times as a queue can build up. The tour itself is well organised, very informative and interesting. The size of the catacombs is very impressive even though you only visit a small portion of them.

Who doesn't love a nice catacombe? This one consists of a paid tour, a few euros, and about 30 minutes. We walked through a somewhat vast labyrinth of little tombs while the guide explained in English and Italian the particulars of each 'attraction.' We learned a bit about burial rites and the local history along the way. There's some interesting... More

I have been to a few catacombs but these are some of the best I have seen. They are fast and are escorted tours which are very informative. A must see x

We had read about this in TA as well as some research we'd done ahead of our trip. This is another world underground! The mere idea of this mass burial site is mind boggling. Religious and the wealthy had the best burial spots. The religious had frescos painted outside the grave. A new / old fresco was located just 7... More

You have to book a tour, which is English and Italian, and lasts about 45 minutes - in November there was 1 each hour (and the site closes for lunch). The tour guide knew her subject, and explained that the catacombs had been carved out of an old Greek aqueduct. You aren't allowed to take any photos except in the... More

Excellent tour of the extensive catacombs beneath Siracusa. Be sure to check tour times on their website as we hit in the middle of the day and had to wait. Very good rainy day activity, by the way. Tours are in both Italian and English and give you a good feel for the former permanent residents of the tombs. By... More

The catacombes open at 2.30 for the afternoon. So we arrive on time to be told tours commence at 3.15 and you can only visit with a tour. Odd? we thought so. If it is ope why do we wait for 45 minutes, OK 15 minutes but 45?? Weird. Anyway there is a decent cafe nearby so we went for... More
