Don’t bother

What could be a really interesting tour is completely ruined by an uninterested and clearly bored guide

Our guide, who was about as enthusiastic as a sloth, spoke such poor English that it was nigh on impossible to understand a word he quickly rambled. But what he did say followed only the Italian version, as it is evidently more convenient to hold tours in both Italian and English together, and get people out the doors ASAP, presumably so he can get back to his afternoon nap. His work ethic was appalling.

If you do arrive at the advertised opening time of 2.30pm, do be aware that you can’t visit the catacombs until the guided tour time of 3.15, so do make sure you’ve got a crossword puzzle or similar to pass the time.

In and out in 30 minutes, and you won’t take anything away with you other than a memory of some chiselled out rock, and that of a “guide” who clearly has absolutely no wish to be there. My wife’s attempt to ask a question was met with a such a reluctant and unhelpful answer, only a corpse could possibly have bettered it.

Would be a far, far better experience with an audio guide.

Go to the catacombs in Rome or Paris instead. Or even better, those in Palermo

Attended a wedding onsite and visited the Catacombes
Jun. 2019
It's a magical setting for a wedding and that's how we visited the church. Otherwise what remains of it is not much. Underneath, a visit to the Catacombs is really worth it though. It's eerie, very well preserved, guides are very good and know how to explain a long and arduous history in a one hour tour. I highly recommend both but not the church alone. We had prior reservations because we were a large group but I did see some walk-ins.

Very interesting history

You have to go on a tour but the tour was really good. The catacombes go on for a long way and it is interesting to hear their history.

Amazing site but terrible tour
Sep. 2019 • Couples
The catacombs themselves were really interesting but the tour was terrible! The guide was rushed, his english was terrible and the group was too big. We were about 30 people on the tour, 20 english speaking and 10 Italians. Those in the front were not asked to move aside when the guide switched to english so we couldn't see what he was talking about and understood very little of what he said. When the majority of the group continued onward, then the remaining 8-10 finally got a chance to see what the speech had been about.
A really cool place and worth a visit, but maybe do some research in advance as you likely won't get much info from the tour itself.

Interesting caves

Many tunnels here but the tour that was provided in Italian and English was poorly executed for English speaking people.
So many people in each group that it was difficult to see where the guide was pointing. If doing this Catacombe recommend not to bother with the guide.

Pleasant enough - visitors need to set their expectations
Sep. 2019
8 euro each (adults - 3.5YO son was free) brought admission to a 45-minute guided tour, which took in part of the labyrinth below. Really interesting tale of Christianity's origins on Sicily dove-tailed into the post-war period when the nearby cathedral was built. Brought home on second-half of tour.

Although worthwhile, you need to be on a guided tour (slots were 1500/1600/1700). Unlike the ones visited in Palermo (can see corpses) or Paris (lavish surroundings), these are quite plain indeed. Visitots therefore need to set their expectations before going.

Really interesting and historical place, the guide explanations were exhausting but she was so rude and had a terrible pronunciation that made me misunderstand some words.

Visit to the catacombs.
Jul. 2019 • Family
Interesting place to visit. We were told St Paul after his arrival first celebrated mass in Sicily in the catacombs. The cost was 8 euros which is ok but there were four of us ( 2 over 16) so it was 32 euros for a tour that lasted 30 mins approx (we joined it a little after it started). The guide's English is fairly basic.

Definitely worth a visit if you are interested in the origins of the early Christian church .

Interesting visit, photographing prohibited
Jul. 2019 • Couples
We visited this during a very hot day, so going underground was very welcome. The ticket is 8€ per person and the guided tour is both in Italian and English (one after the other). You can not visit without a guide. The tour takes about 45 minutes. They forbid you to take photos inside and I don't really understand the reasoning behind that, since I don't know what harm taking a few photos would do. I can imagine that (almost) everyone would like to have at least a photo or two for their own personal archive of all the things they visited while on vacation (I know I would). Overall, it was interesting and something new.
