Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This gate is at the entrance to the old town of Palermo in Sicily. It was built in 1535 to commemorate Charles V's conquest of Tunis and his visit to the King of Sicily. It was built in a typical Arab-Norman style, and the east and west sides of the gate are built in completely different styles, making it a sight to behold.

It is the gateway to the old city of Palermo. Triumphal Arch built in 1583, to celebrate the victory of Charles I of Spain and his entry into the Kingdom of Sicily. It has a baroque style, with pillars, statues, columns and shields that adorn it. It is a place that can be used a lot to take good photos.

The entrance to the historical centre of Palermo is so monumental! This city gate was built in the XV. century. After the emperor Charles V conquered Tunisia, on September 13th 1535 he entered Palermo through it. It was rebuilt in 1583 to commemorate the victory.

Very decorative victory celebration gate, with male telamon pillar forms and the very ornate upper section.

In architecture, Porta Nova looks like at real gate or gateway to the city whereas, Porta Felice, another famed gate of Palermo looks more like a walled entranceway. Both were completed in the 17th century. Porta Nuova was built to be a gateway to the Royal Palace of Palermo (Palazzo dei Normanni) and to commemorate the victory of Charles V, the then Roman Emperor, in the 1535 conquest of Tunis. Thus, this baroque victory gate embellished with decor.

Palermo is a metropolitan city, Sicily island capital, art, culture, food and drink. The great writer Giuseppe Tomasi Di Lampedusa was born here.

Take a nice stroll here after your visit to the Palermo cathedral, buy an arancini from the nearby Sfrigola, find a nice spot to sit and admire the intricate elements of the gate in both Norman and Arab styles. Come during sunset where the colours are softer.

The entrance to the old Palermo, the exit from the old Palermo ... what a difference between the old and beautiful part of the city and the new and not too clean part of the city.

But not something that I would go very far out of my way to see, just happened to be passing whilst walking 'along the prom' - a particularly British pass-time.

For many years this gate served as the principal land entry into Palermo.

This is the second gate to stand in this location and dates from 1669. It was built after fire destroyed the 15th century gate in 1667. The original gate was known as the "Porta dell'Aquila" – Gate of the Eagle - and the current gate became known as the Porta Nuova.
