- V Y20 contributionsGreat experienceReally interesting experience to see the locals favorite Saint. Trip is easier than I thought. Take the pilgrim bus #812, 30 minutes up to the top, pilgrims say their prayers and 20 minutes later the same bus takes you back. The same driver seems to just do this one route all day, seeinghow skilled he is. The bus is quite on time, leaves from piazza Sturzo, every 1.5 hrs, schedule on the Amat website.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 October 2023

Be careful on the way back; they take a different route. Go to the shrine in the late afternoon. There is no one there.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 8 November 2023
- Sally62Northampton, United Kingdom6,055 contributionsInteresting to visit this culturally important siteSituated on Monte Pellegrino high above the city, this Sanctuary is where the bones of Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of the city, were discovered 400 years ago. There are pathways up the hillside that pilgrims use but it would be a long hot walk - about 2 hours. We were going to take the bus but were advised at our hotel that they were not very reliable so take a taxi but that cost us 60 euros so I definitely recommend you take the bus - they were turning up every 15 minutes or so and we caught it back down for about 5 euros! It was really interesting to visit so would recommend a trip up there. the cave itself is cold and drips with water so take something to cover up as it's cold in there even though it was over 30 degrees outside. Some cafes, stalls and toilets available on the road outside.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 May 2024

Beautiful, the sanctuary is inside a cave and as you enter you feel the emotion of faith and devotion. Absolutely worth visiting! Keep in mind that throughout the month of September you can not go by car, you have to take a bus, which passes at different times near the roundabout of the entrance of the street that you do on foot. For a devotional speech you should do on foot, I'm about if I'm not mistaken, 7 kilometers, uphill. While for all the other months of the year you can get to the sanctuary with your own car. Once you arrive and along the way you can admire a beautiful panorama. I write this last but not because it is not important, Recommendation to bring an empty water bottle, to fill it with blessed water. Near the shrine there are stalls selling souvenirs and even very small bottles to fill the with water. I tried several times to call and write a message on the number on the sanctuary site, to ask for info but they never answered. I hope I've been helpful for those who want to go there!

The visit to the Sanctuary is really a must if you are in the area.
It is a place of prayer, but even those who do not believe remain fascinated.
Also, to climb the pilgrim mountain the view is beautiful, only this is already worth it.
Next to the Sanctuary there is access to the museum which, according to the Guide, opens only during the period of the treasure routes.
Honestly, it's not worth it.
On the way out, there are toilets for a fee and lots of stalls where you can buy souvenirs.
Recommendation to continue on the right for the closed road, from there you can admire a beautiful view. I leave you the picture.

We were lucky enough to be in Palermo on the day of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the remains of Santa Rosalia on 4/9/1624.
What to say! Reading the story of this Saint and how she eradicated the plague in the city of Palermo, left us moved and hopeful. The Saint appeared to a sick fisherman telling him where his remains were buried. They were found in procession in the city and the plague was eradicated. Sanctuary dug inside the cave where Santa Rosalia took refuge for most of her life. Absolutely worth visiting to pray for those dear to us!!

Sanctuary set in the rock on the mountain and located high up ...from here you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Gulf of Palermo. The history and legend of the patron saint and the system of pipes that makes the drops of water fall inside the chapel are beautiful... worth seeing! The bus from Palermo is very comfortable and takes you back down in half an hour... worth seeing if you are in the area!

I must say that even for me, a convinced atheist and not in the least touched by spiritual questions, the visit to the sanctuary of Santa Rosalia left a strange taste in my mouth. In a certain sense it nourished my soul even though I didn't give it any mystical or religious value. The story behind it, whether you believe it or not, intertwined with the beauty of the place, set in the rock and with such a fervent popular belief, still evoked something in me.

The place has since long been an attraction for tourists like Goethe, Lord Byron, Maestro Wagner ... The life of Santa Rosalia must have been a lot harder than you would imagine seeing the lovely figure in the shrine. See also San Benedetto Il Moro in a side chapel. If you want to avoid the pilgrimage on foot, take Bus 812 from Libertá Croci, runs every hour. From the road you get a good view of how big Palermo is.

Unfortunately the climb to the sanctuary is a bit convoluted, but if you don't want to go by car there is a bus service that goes from Mondello to Palermo which passes through there. I must admit that I was surprised by the sanctuary, which is housed inside a very particular natural cave. You exit the twisted world and enter a place of peace and serenity. Continuing on the asphalt road that goes up to the right, after a couple of bends you arrive at a square at the top of the mountain overlooking Palermo. Surprised for the second time by the breathtaking 360 degree view of the Gulf of Palermo. Not to be missed!

A great way to spend a few hours while you are in Palermo. You can take an hourly bus up and down, or hike it. I hiked up and took the bus down as I wanted both experiences. The hike is 1 to 1.5 hours each way depending on your speed.
I found the hike wonderful, nice zone 2 cardio on pedestrian only paths with beautiful views of the Palermo area. If I was in Palermo for an extended stay, I would do it weekly and walk both ways.
As for the attraction itself, it is spiritual and will unique. Worth a one time view.
