Look for the signs to the right as you pass through the gate in front of the cathedral. We visited on a combined ticket with the Museo Diocesano which is located next door.
Good descriptive signage and safe, sturdy walkways.
These underground thermal structures date from the 4th and 5th centuries. Only a portion is accessible under the Cathedral. Access is through a corridor with a barrel vault that passes through the foundation of the Cathedral on the right side.
The first Cathedral of Catania was built on this site in 1088 and a Benedictine monastery – now the building that houses the Museo Diocesano – was built next to it.

Nothing special except the smell off of the stagnant water. Three euros was in my opinion a tad expensive for what in the end of the day was not that exciting. The best part of it was the family of cats on the left when you walk into the main area. Not friendly but curious in what i was doing.

It's been a surprise to see the signs straight away insider the cathedral fence all the way to right side.
The structure is a typical Roman thermal baths with an underground river and several arches and atriums were the ancient Roman enjoyed the beneficial power of volcanic waters.
Do not expect a Great dialogue from the duty guys luckily there are signs and descriptions to see
Anyway must seen the 3 euros tickets it worth it.

The Achilliane baths are just right of the main entrance into Catanias cathedral.
There are signs that point you to them, but you might miss them.
The tickets were sold right there on the spot, cost 3€/person and alow you to visit the ancient baths,only discivered in 18.ct.
The baths are UNDER the cathedral, with good explanations on what you are looking at.
All in all a quick trip into the underground to marvel at all the skill and artistry of the ancients - you don't feel so smart all of a sudden.

As you go into the cathedral you will see a sign to the right for the Terme Achilliane. To buy a ticket you have to go to the Diocesan museum a couple of doors down. The cathedral is closed between 12.00 and 4.00 with all the gates locked. The baths are open until 2.00, so when you see the locked gates it looks as if the baths are closed. A guide from the museum unlocks the gates and lets you into the baths. He put the lights on for us and then waited outside, giving us as long as we liked. It was a marvellous experience being down in the ancient Roman baths by ourselves. There is a central room with four pillars, the walls being partly decorated. There is an interesting system of canals.

I am almost always fascinated by Greek and Roman archaeological sites. This one was a little underwhelming. It consists of a primary room with arches which has been carefully restored and includes water conduits with flowing water. The "guide" who accompanied my on my "private" (only one in my party) tour tried hard but spoke little English and was therefore unable to add much to my experience there. Fortunately, access was three Euros (senior rate), so it was an acceptable value.

Not a very big site but it was only €3 to get in. Interesting little place. It’s a little smelly but not too bad and worth a visit if you are in the area.

Located under the main cathedral, the entrance to the baths is on the right.

Right next to the Duomo you can explore the underground world. Catania is basically built in layers after the eruptions, the Therme are so well preserved!

The entrance to this little hidden treasure is tucked away at one end near the entrance to the Duomo. It can easily be missed. Getting tickets is required but is a bit of a hassle as you have to go down several shops to get them and then return. It is also only open at odd times. Worth the effort however. The Romans sure knew how to take care of themselves.

May visitors get in the water?

No. It is a controlled visit for a few at a time. It is a slippery steep descent to the baths. I can’t imagine anyone wanted to enter the water. By the way, it is underground river water, not some well or hot spring.
