This is no doubt a lovely beach, as the saying goes ‘you can’t keep a good thing down’. My visit was just after peak season but it was so crowded on Sept 9th I would hate to think what it would be like in July-August. I will not return during my 11 night visit to the area.
Advise you go to south end of beach where it is less busy and there’s a nice cafe/bar. Nice without the crowds but so many nicer places to spend a day.

The beach itself is beautiful. We drove there and parked by the street. We arrived at 10 and it was already quite many people and parked cars. On the way down to the beach there were a lot of different people trying to sell you things like bikinis, umbrellas and more. At the beach we wanted to rent chairs and an umbrella, tried to get these in the front row of the beach but they were reserved for several months (!) so we got chairs in the back. They charged us 50 euros for two chairs (good chairs) and an umbrella. Quite expensive but we really wanted this for the whole day.
It was very busy and some people even laid on their towels in the pathway down to the water! For lunch we had pizza at the diner on the beach which was okay. Staff was very friendly! Overall 3/5, too busy for us and too few options for food and toilets were not nice.
Picture is from 10 am.

We were quite disappointed with this beach after reading some good reviews on it.
This beach is relatively small in size and was very overcrowded. It is a shame as the water looks beautiful but it is very hard to find a spot to relax on the beach and there is 0 social distancing which is concerning at the moment.

The beach is great: clear and calm water, you can see little fishes . However is a very small beach and the rented chairs occupy a large space on the sand. Moreover the chairs need to be reserved in advance and as a tourist that is not an information easy to find.

The beach is very much overcrowded. The car park is far too small for the amount of people visiting so most cars are parked on the street with a long walk to the beach. Once on the beach it is very overcrowded and lots of salesmen hawking their wares. The beach itself is nice and sandy, with shallow waters good for young kids.

This beach is absolutely beautiful. Cristal clear and calm water with white sand. You can find easy space around, beach cafe for snacks and fast food. Prices were not too expensive. If you are coming by bus check on arrival the return times because is only 1 bus. Friendly beach for families with children. It has a massive parking space for cars and motorcycles.

Yes it’s busy in august. Every single beach is busy. This is a nice beach that has some shade to stake out your own spot and loungers for a fee. Calm and shallow water. Once you wade out far enough you can definitely have a nice swim. Parking along the street is free. There are two lots that are pay by hour but were full by 11. There is a shower at the lot closer to the beach entrance that’s 1 euro. Convenient when you’re walking back to your car. Not sure about bathrooms on the beach. There is a cafe/bar.

There is no denying that Porto Istana beach is stunningly beautiful, caressed by warm turquoise water and views out across to Tavolara island.
The only issue will be (in August anyway) the amount of real estate (beach towel space!) you desire, it was limited when we turned up mid afternoon.
Snorkeling was fun but there was not a lot to see, fish limited to Saddled Seabream (black spot on tail).
On the plus side there is plenty of free street parking and a couple of designated car parks.

Beautiful beach with powder soft sand and a rich Sardinian feel. So picturesque and pleasant. There is a very peaceful feel (despite the beach being highly popular in August) with lots of families. A lot of Italian families on holiday here. English are definitely a minority here. The water is warm and shallow, clear and blue. The sand is very fine and soft under foot. Beautiful
