- sandro712Naples, Italy877 contributionsPhotographing in the rain!A visit to the bastion of San Remy is an experience not to be missed, if I say so as I don't like stairs too much... believe me! The 24 meter high monument has 170 steps. The effort and regrets you feel towards the ninetieth step are rewarded by the splendid terrace named after Umberto I of Savoy. All of Cagliari is at your feet! You can see all the neighborhoods of the city, the illuminated streets and the flowing traffic, the sea with the entire port. Even though I had caught a day of bad weather, I enjoyed the show anyway: in fact, this made the view and the photos I took even more evocative!Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 1 April 2024
- Mallo_PahanenHelsinki, Finland990 contributionsGood views and an impressive monument!Quite an impressive monument in Cagliari's old town. Here, if anywhere, marble has been used and the views from this top have been great over the city. Around the monument in the old town there is a lot to see, shops, housing, local life and cafes. The destination should be included in your Cagliari's trip.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024
- alessandra_biondi3Ferrara, Italy30,688 contributionsBastion that connects the castle to the lower part of the cityI saw the bastion from different angles, the impact is remarkable, it is an imposing structure in the Castello district, currently used as a cultural space or for artistic exhibitions. From the terrace the view is beautiful and in perspective under the arch you can see the Basilica of Bonaria. Unmissable!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 May 2024
- sfalcone2018Oxford, United Kingdom108 contributionsGreat at night as well as in the morningWent there on a late night tour of Cagliari as we landed late. Very beautiful as there were few cars crossing. Went all the way to the top where you can see the city from there, much busier in the morning. The road on the left takes you to the main shopping street and to the right, towards the murales.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 2 September 2024
- Guido CTurin, Italy1,207 contributionsThe BastionThe people of Cagliari call it "il Bastione", and it is a symbolic monument of Cagliari. It is named after Filippo Pallavicino delle Frabose, general and baron of Saint Remy (small town of the duchy of Aosta), first viceroy 'Piedmont of Sardinia. You can climb the many steps to the top or walk up the street behind the monument to get to the top. From the top, you get some really great views.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 October 2024

The Bastion of Saint Remy served at the same time as protection and as an access route to Castello, the historic district of Cagliari located on high ground. Today it is among the most symbolic places in the city, both seen from below with the monumental staircase, and, perhaps even more so, from above, in which a panoramic square has been set up which is among the main meeting points of the city movement and allows beautiful views in all directions. Absolutely advisable to admire it from various perspectives.

On the occasion of an excursion from a Costa ship we walked into the historic center of Cagliari and arrived at these wonderful and majestic Bastions.
The stairs leading to the terrace are, both on the right and on the left, always the same for the entire stretch that goes up. On the right side of the square (looking at the Bastions), in the municipal villa, there is an elevator, for those who do not want or cannot take the stairs, and it always leads to the terrace. The Bastion of Saint Remy was built to connect the manor with the lower city and bears the name of the first Piedmontese viceroy who had it built starting in 1896 on what were the ancient Spanish bastions. A visit including the terrace above is highly recommended.

One of the main attractions of the Old Town is the huge Terrazo Umberto I. This building is together with the Bastione di Saint Remy and they give a wonderful view to the city and the bay. The bastione was built in 19th century. We visited it several times and enjoyed the sunset from the top.

The name "Bastion" creates expectations among tourists to see a fortress with towers and cannons. However, in reality we see something similar to a staircase with a retaining wall like in the Piazza del Popolo in Rome or the Aqua Paola fountain in the same place. However, imagination can restore the bastion that used to be. Rather, there were 3 bastions: Zecca, Santa Caterina, Sperone (Spur). At the end of the XIX century, the bastions were converted into a neoclassical staircase, a hidden gallery and a terrace under the direction of engineers Giuseppe Costa and Fulgenzio Seti. The name of the bastion is disorienting. Filippo-Guglielmo Pallavicini, Baron de Saint-Remy has nothing to do with the construction or reconstruction of the bastion. He was twice the first viceroy of Sardinia in the first quarter of the XVIII century, when Sardinia became part of Savoy under the terms of the Hague Treaty. He wasn't famous for anything. Most tourists, like us, are limited to visiting the Umberto terrace, which offers excellent views of Cagliari and a staircase. However, there is a covered gallery with landings. A ticket there costs 8 euros. I don't know if it's worth going there. We were in a hurry and didn't go.

Pictures simply do not do this justice. Even on hot days, paying a visit to this monument is very much worth it. Climbing the many stairs can be tiring, but it gives a beautiful view of the entire city.

My favourite spot in Cagliari. This monument is simply stunning. Beautiful structure, especially in the sunshine with blue skies. The piazza below it has some outstanding cafes and restaurants. The piazza on the top is simply a piazza with some benches, trees and telescopes with views over the city. It is a shortcut to get to the cathedral.
A must see in Cagliari.

I really enjoyed it. It is in (or close) to the very crowded area of Cagliari and you don't need a lot of time to find it. It is a magnificent building which has resisted over the years. The view from the rooftop is also spectacular. The least important thing, there were services nearby. Hehe.

To get to the top you first have to walk steeply up and then up a few steps. Upstairs on the square it is quite busy with people and when we were there there were also a number of children.
Above the well-known sellers with bags, jewelry, hats and scarves.
However, the view is something to definitely go up.

Coming down from a shopping street, you will come across this beautiful monument. Take a little strength to show all the steps. The 360 degree view is worth the detour. You will then reach the Santa Maria church and others.

The place is overrated. The views are nice but not amazing or breathtaking. The plexiglass around takes all the feeling away. It also is full of graffiti. The whole area requires maintenance and investments. So - it’s nice but disappointing.

Have the renovations been completed on this bastion? We were here last year and the stairs were fenced off.
