- CeilingsPALansdale, Pennsylvania818 contributionsExcellent visitWe visited all of the tourist must do’s in Verona and this is one of the best. The day we visited it was quiet (no tour groups) we could walk around and investigate at our leisure, inside and outside, good walls to climb and many great photo opportunities. Highly recommend you visit, it really is worth your time.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 September 2023
- Richard MHampstead Norreys, United Kingdom937 contributionsLovely building and lovely artworkThe Castel is a lovely building full of history and oncredible artwork. There are loads of historic art pieces mostly religious but thats what you get in renainssance Italy. A lovely place to explore with some excellent views.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 October 2023
- Anna HChicago, Illinois1,169 contributionsFortressFortress on the river, containing an art museum and armory display. The sections are somewhat different architecturally. There is access to the ramparts, where you can view the clockworks and hanging garden. The entrance is through the elegant courtyard.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 8 November 2023
- Raj N377 contributionsGreat place to visit! Especially on a rainy day!A great place to visit, especially if like us was a rainy day! Entry for under 18s accompanied by an adult is free, which is a great idea! We paid 9 euros each for an adult. Which allowed entry to rhe castle and museum. A word of caution has very steep steps in some areas. Going round the exhibition there was plenty of seating that allowed us to sit and tale in the exhibits. Would definitely recommend a visitVisited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 March 2024
- Talia12 contributionsVery interesting and worthwhileThis museum is great to wander around, even alone. It was full of old interesting artefacts and pieces, a must see if you're looking to immerse yourself in the history. The view from the top was amazing, looking over the bridge and river, the gardens and the rest of the building. You can roam around most of the building and explore various old stairways and balconies on route to the next room. It was very cheap being under 25 years old also.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 April 2024
- Kerry S108 contributionsMuseumHuge museum covering medieval times, through the Roman times. Lots of archeological finds plus lots of paintings. Lots to see, great views of the city and more understanding of the history of Verona and Italy. Took about 2hrs to go around, and not sure we saw everything!Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 May 2024
- andantesLlinars del Valles, Spain379 contributionsMedieval museum with incredible views.Looking into what to do after visiting the arena, the home of Giulietta and the city center, we headed towards this mueum. We really didn't know what would be inside the museum, but what you will find is interesting paintings and medieval objects. While walking in the museum, there are beautiful views of the river, as well as of the bridge over the river. If possible, visit it at evening, when the natural lights give another atmosphere to your visit. And your photos will be incredilbe.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 June 2024
- Brown_SamanthaKennewick, Washington1,729 contributionsWonderful castle/fortress along the Adige River - enjoyed the museum, grounds, and the fabulous bridgeWe arrived when the castle museum first opened, after walking and exploring the Ponte Scaligero (the red brick bridge spanning the Adige River). The courtyard had statues and fountains and beautiful flowers. Be prepared to walk some uneven steps and stairs. This is a castle/fortress after all. We did not see many children, as this is not conducive to strollers due to all the steps and narrow corridors. Not a Sunday market. Not a lot of people, which made the visit very nice. It is part of the Verona Pass, so entrance is already paid for. Many of the rooms displayed religion themed paintings and artifacts. A lot of Madonna and Christ. We especially liked the room with all the armors and sculptures of riders and their suit up. Overall it was definitely worth the couple of hours we were here. Walk up and out for a sweeping view of the area, quite enjoyable. Great place to explore on your own, at leisure and without endless lectures. When needed, we did find one bathroom facility and was surprised to find the "squat" toilet style in the ground! Have not seen that in a long time, dating back to decades ago visiting Italy for the first time. As the phrase says, it is what it is. When in Rome......in this case, when in Castelvecchio, people have been warned.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 July 2024
- phat_dawg_21Alpharetta, Georgia16,948 contributionsGreat way to spend an hourThe castle and grounds are impressive, and walking the ramparts offers superb views of the city and the river. No self respecting castle can go without an armory, and this one has a large collection of weaponry. The museum contains a large assortment of religious as well as secular art. The gallery includes works by Marten Van Cleef and Pieter Paul Rubens. There is also a group of of sculptures.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 August 2024
- Alex570Tallinn, Estonia71 contributionsHidden germ in VeronaThe best place in Verona. If Julietta's house and balcony are a well-known tourist trap - everyone has to go there for 15 minutes, then this museum is much more worth visiting. You can walk in the medieval fortress, and on the bridge, and visit the museum. The museum is relatively small, but the fortress is big. There are few people - you can calmly walk and enjoy, especially if the weather is very hot.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 August 2024

The place itself is great but the items on display are very repetitive.... either the madonna or the crucifixion (about 100 of each). Theres one small room with medevial weapons but thats it.
Not worth the entry fee and the staff literally follow you from room to room they clearly don't know that threes a crowd

Strategically perched by the river, the museum is located in the old fortified garrison. It was built by the all powerful Scaliger family and has been occupied by the French in the times of Napoleon and by the Austrians post World War. It is built in gothic style.

The castle would be worth a visit on it's own but the museum and gallery are a bonus considering the 6 euro entrance (cheaper for young people, old people, etc.) Most of the displays have information in multiple languages, but audio guides are available for 4 euro.
The museum is mainly art related but a couple of rooms about swords, daggers and other weapons pre guns.
The displays are very accessible, with many ancient and valuable pieces that are not behind glass, you are trusted not to touch. Photography is also permitted.

We purchased 2 adult tickets (EUR 6 each) and the audio tour (EUR 4). There’s lots to see in the museum: paintings, (restored) wall decorations, objects and weaponry. We followed the audio tour and learned a about the things on display. There is not much of a story line, but maybe we are wrong and it’s just because of our lack of historic knowledge.
That said, the castle offers some beautiful views of the environment and the building/walls itself. Even if you are not interested in what the museum has to offer, it still worth purchasing a ticket :-).

I spent over 3 hours here learning about many centuries of Verona's Roman, medieval & renaissance history. The audio guide was terrific. I learned why Verona was important and to who during its long history and when it was particularly successful artistically and militarily.

I've never experienced anything like this - it was really disappointing. The Castelvecchio museum itself is a stunning building with a nice collection of religious art, but our experience with our 6mo baby and 3yo daughter (both seasoned museum-goers!) was extremely poor. Toilet facilities are limited, meaning I had to queue for ages for the pleasure of changing my baby son on the dirty floor of a squat toilet. Pushchairs are not permitted on site, and backpacks must be worn on the front. This is understandable to protect the art, but the museum lacks the facilities to support these requirements. It was extremely challenging to get around the site while carrying two small children and our backpacks off our backs, and staff remained extremely strict despite watching several parents (not just us) visibly struggle around the site. We were also told before we entered that we needed to keep our toddler on a short leash. All in all - a most unfriendly experience and totally unnecessary. A couple of lockers and a changing table would sort it!

The way castle is restored is magnificent. But it's completely unsuitable for pushchairs, both for babies and disabled, and that's not advertised nor signposted anywhere. Another thing- there is only one (literally one!) toilet cubicle for the entire museum, with squatting WC. No baby changing facilities either, we were forced to change our baby in the buggy. When we entered the castle, the security woman was obviously very bored and not very friendly telling us we can't get in with the buggy and even the baby food.
On the plus side then, the restoration Carlo Scarpa did in the 1960s is really, really tasteful. The original medieval building tissue has been carefully reinstated, and skillfully infilled with contrasting modern stone, steel and concrete. The architect is using this poetic play of the old and the new to lead a viewer through the exhibition. The culmination is the place where he raised the Cangrande statue up in the air and created a series of balconies, steps and loggias. On the steps- it's really difficult to re-think an element of architecture which is present in human architecture for thousands of years, and Scarpa has achieved that. Hats off for that

Nicely laid out, the museum gives space to each of the items in there.
I went on a Tuesday morning just as it opened so it wasn’t very busy, which meant there was plenty of space to move about and take in whatever I thought was interesting and explore the outside spaces.
It was 6€ entry for 1 person - pretty good value for money.
The only thing that would of made it a 5/5 would of been a little more information on the wall next to each item - you could purchase an audio tour thing and in some rooms there were descriptions in different languages.

Is it possible to get a guided tour in the Museo Castelvecchio focusing especially on the architecture of Scarpa?
Written 30 August 2018
Hi Edward,
When I visited I just wandered myself and there was plenty of written information in many languages.
However you can get guided tours, the contact from the website for tours.
I have attempted to submit it on tripadvisor to you but it won’t send with a HTML in it.
If you type in Museo di Castelvecchio on google and click translate it will take you to the website in English.
Under the Servizi (services) tab there is guided tours and the contact is there for you.
I hope this helps
