Neighbourhood: Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

Had noticed this stunning, large building a few times, as lots of people were sitting on the steps outside, when we were in the Tolintino Square. On our last morning in Venice, we went inside. It is absolutely stunning, with a beautiful alter, side alters and painted ceilings. We sat in total peace for about 30 mins, admiring both the structure and decor, whilst also reflecting on our visit to beautiful Venice.

This is a beautiful temple-looking church with a wonderful interior, especially its stunning dome, which is beautifully painted.

Church of San Nicolò da Tolentino :- A small oratory dedicated to St Nicholas of Tolentino was built on this site in 1528 for the use of San Gaetano da Thiene and his followers, the Theatines, who came to Venice following the Sack of Rome. The present church was commissioned from Vincenzo Scamozzi, who was awarded a salary of 50 ducats a year, and work began on the 7th of June 1590. The foundation stone was laid on the 7th of November 1591. In early 1595 the fathers broke their contract with Scamozzi accusing him of using expensive and unsuitable materials. Collapsing pilasters were mentioned. The architect accused the fathers of breaking their contract. The squabble was resolved, the work was continued by the monks themselves, and the church was consecrated on 20th October 1602, although the interior construction and decoration was not finished until 1671. The great classical porch was added to the unfinished façade in 1706-14 by Andrea Tirali using money bequeathed by Alvise da Mosto at his death in 1701 to pay for a family memorial.
In 1780 the fathers gave all their silverware to a chap called Romano who claimed to have perfected a new method for cleaning silver. They never saw it, or him, again.
The church was suppressed in 1810, closing on the 12th of May, but reopened for worship on the 25th of October the same year to replace the closed parish church of Santa Croce, which was later demolished to make way for the garden that eventually became the Giardino Papadopoli, up by Piazzale Roma. The convent is now used by Venice University's Institute of Architecture (see cloister photo below left) having been modernised in 1961-63 by Daniele Calabi, with an entrance by Carlo Scarpa added in 1984.

With its large Corinthian portico (the only one in Venice), this church is worth a quick visit, if one is in the area. Bigger than expected, it is very attractive

This church is located in the Sestiere of Santa Croce, in the eponymous campo, fronting the eponymous canal, located a short distance from Piazzale Roma. 6 Corinthian columns support the churches portico. Above the portico is a large oval window

Small church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Tolentini was built in fifteenth century. If the tourist has time, it is good to visit.

We we're in the area so we popped in. While there are many famous churches in Venice and you know what - in the richest cities of old Europe, Churches like Tolentini's are easy to ignore, but they it is much more beautiful on the inside than many others in Europe.

Yet another church it would be easy to pass by. The façade isn't much to look at, although I've seen worse. It is light and airy inside, bigger than I was expecting. It houses the tombs of several Doge's and also has the funeral monument to the Patriarch of Venice, Francesco Morosini by Filippo Parodi amongst other works. Worth a look...especially on a hot day...
