Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

As soon as you enter the San Pantalon church, you are captivated by the trompe-l'oeil ceiling painted by GIAN ANTONIO FUMIANI. It is an illustration of the martyrdom of San Pantalon which literally sucks us in to such an extent that we tend to forget the rest. It's all the more breathtaking when we know that it involves mounting 40 canvases on frames which took almost 25 years. Do not miss !!!!

The artwork in the church is astounding; you might spend more than a few minutes appreciating the Martyrdom and Apotheosis of St. Pantalon on the nave ceiling. Tremendous. The church offers an amazing gem in a chapel at the left... the last work by Veronese is accompanied by a Vivarini, a Coronation of the Virgin. Truly spectacular. If the chapel is not open, ask the sexton for admission... it is one of the best preserved and marvelous pieces we viewed in any Venetian church. For anyone interested in the history of Venetian art, St. Pantalon is a must.

Stunning church, in particular for the ceiling, which seems wonderfully frescoed and is actually entirely covered with a gigantic painting; more than 400 m2 of canvases joined together, wonderful. Too bad about the little light (for a fee). Entrance is free.

As having enough time and walk through many parts (small islands) of Venice it was surprise how many different parts of town exists there. Distances by walking were not too long, especially during out of peak season. This church surprised with it's ceilings. Really impressive look.

This church is beyond amazing. It would be easy to walk past without a second glance. We walked in,looked and up and just said wow... the ceiling is amazing and took 20 years and 40 canvases. The story of Saint Pantalon is a sad one,as it is with most of them and how they meet their end. Its well worth going and also the snack places ate cheaper.
Near by there is a Banksy to spot by the bridge.

My husband and I went to visit this church because we had read about the canvas painted on the 443 square meter vault. She's magnificent. We were speechless the entire time. San Pantalon remains in the Dorsoduro district.

The current building was built at the end of the 17th century, designed by Francesco Comino. The artistic dominant of the church is the fake ceiling painting by Giovanni Antonio Fumiani, which contains forty scenes from the life of the saint.

Church of San Pantalon is a treasure chest with a very special treasure inside.
Its facade is somewhat ordinary but once you set foot in the church you will be amazed!
The ceiling is fully covered with a huge oil paint - the most extensive in the entire world - consisting of 40 canvas.
It took painter Giovanni Antonio Fumiani 24 years to complete his job.
As you get in if you go to the right side you can use a 1 Euro coin to have the ceiling illuminated: especially useful if you visit the church late in the afternoon or on a dark winter day.
Please always check opening hours on the church official website before you go.
Once you leave the church you can have wonderful cicheti and excellent red wine at a nearby bacaro. Its name is "El Sbarlefo San Pantalon".

We visited this amazing church on one of the La Bussola free walking tours. The outside is nothing but once inside you will be astounded by the paintings on the walls. However when you look up to the ceiling everything else just pales into the shade. The ceiling is the most detailed, exquisite, huge, amazing canvas that you will see anywhere. It is simply stunning. Do not miss this experience.

This church proves the saying "Don't judge a book by it's cove'"
The stunning interior more than compensates the blank exterior.
A definite must for all art lovers
