The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

It is a little beautiful square. It is not one of the main sights of Venice and so there are only few tourists. On one side of the square, there is the San Tomà church, which gives the squae the name. As we were there during Carneval, we saw local people celebrating there. I saw two restaurats nearby, which looked very good with moderate prices for Venice and didn't seam as to be tourist traps, as it is not a touristy area. It is a good area to enjoy the authentic Venice.

Anyway, here are some photos: the facade, the statue Madonna della Misericordia venerated by the "confratelli" (first half of 1400); the lunette with the bas-relief St.Mark cures St. Aniano (protector of shoemakers) (september 16, 1478); corner columns with inscriptions 1646 ADI 4 XB / FV COMPRADO / QVESTA SCOLLA / DAL ARTE / DI CALEGERI (left - This scuola was bought by the Arte of shoemakers october 4th, 1646) and

One of the real joys of Venice (unless you really love the jostling crowds of Sta Marks Square and Rialto Bridge) is to wander around and discover quiet little neighbourhoods like this one. Take the time to wander in Venice rather than just follow the signs to get to your destination in a hurry!

This is one of many interesting squares you see on the long walk from san salute to rialto.
A huge dominating white church with an interesting figure either side of the front door, several outdoor restaurants and a couple of great shops. On the way out of the square there is a small pretty canal with a fabulous palazzo facing you.

This campo is quite small, but charming. It is rectangular in shape and has a center well. There are many shops, restaurants and cafes. The church of San Toma, which was closed when we were there, sits on the east side. There is also the lovely Scoletta dei Calegheri (the ancient association of shoemakers), with a charming relief above the doorway of Saint Mark Healing the Cobbler Anianus. Looking further up the wall, you will see a 14th century statue of the Madonna della Misericordia. It looks like it is now being used as a library.

My wife & I stayed in this neighborhood during our 3 night stay in Venice, and we loved every minute of it.
Quiet & quaint, there's not much to see or do around the square itself, but there are numerous hidden restaurants and shops all over the neighborhood that makes this area perfect for explorers. We found an excellent home-made pasta store in this area, and the squid sauce pasta is just amazing in taste and very cheap. There is also a local vaporetto bus stop right around the corner from here (around 1-2 min walk), so very convenient location to visit and explore.

Off the streaming tourists but still en route to the central station, the maze of small streets with high walls remind of ancient Arabian medinas. We stayed in the neighbourhood for a week during the Carnival, never got tired of exploring it. Lost ourselves terribly not once, but it was huge fun.

is the easiet way to get from the train station to Campo San Toma and how far is it?

Hi Yvonne,
The easiest way is to catch the vaporetto number 1 or 2 to San Toma, then just walk right down the alleyway and turn right at the end. It's the only path between the water bus stop so not hard to find.
If I recall correctly the ride was around 30-40 mins.
