The owner, Sergio, saw me shyly gazing at his art in his windows and he invited me in to have a closer look as he applied gold leaf to a mask. Sergio was so friendly and inviting to me- and he got a kick out of me being American (here for military orders) at a time when Americans can’t travel here so we discussed current times, adventures here in Italy for me and his endeavors in the States for Sergio- and then I told him of my interest in the history of mask making and my desire to have a mask of each “personality”. I really appreciated the personal approach Sergio took with me in helping me decide on La Moretta and the Jester to add to my collection. He took the time to sign my masks and we took a photo together! I will always look at my two masks and fondly remember my visit to Sergio’s shop! I even went home that night and watched Eyes Wide Shut so I could admire more of his creative works in the movie since I had not seen it before! If you truly appreciate the art of mask making then you will find value and true craftsmanship at Sergio’s shop on the Rialto bridge!

There is a unique smell of oil paint as you step into either of these amazing shops/workshops. As many others have said, this is the real deal, with lots of Hollywood celeb photos in the window. We purchased two masks - and considering the hours of work and craftsmanship which has gone into these, feel we've actually bought a piece of artwork rather than just a holiday momento.

Italian brothers Sergio and Massimo Boldrin have for more than 35 years offered authentic masks, worked in accordance with centuries-old craftsmanship and traditions. They have two shops in Venice - the one few meters from the Rialto bridge likely being the easiest for many to find. Their customers include Hollywood celebrities. Why would you possibly waste money on Chinese manufactured masks of poor quality from any of the too many shops and street sellers pushing inferior products, when you can go to the Boldrin brothers and get the real deal from as low as EUR15!? Go there and support people who remain true to the tradition of paper mache mask making.
