Simple but grand - impressive church next to Venice hospital on the north side. Quieter round this area so calm and peaceful. Good restaurants nearby.

Santi Giovanni e Paolo, known to locals as San Zanipolo, is a gigantic Gothic barn of a church built between 1333 and 1385. While it does not make a unified impression, its treasures are the tombs, monuments, stained glass, and paintings some of Venice's best...More

This is the most beautiful of churches - simple in style from the outside and magnificent in all it's peacefulness inside. It truly is a place of enormous serenity and if it could be defined, holiness. It is a place to truly escape and reflect...More

Enjoyed Sunday mass, checked out the artifacts, and enjoyed the church. The priest was especially warm and welcoming.

It's very picturesque but a bit packed with tourists in July. Everyone coming to Venice has to visit this place.

S. Giovanni e Paolo Basilica is impressive. You will need up to an hour to visit it. It is not so close to the ''center'' of the city (St. Mark's Square) but if you have time, go there by all means. Please note that it...More

There is something wonderful about the fact that when the square floods in the winter (poor drainage) they just set up some glorified tables for a makeshift bridge. If you have anything waterproof in the way of footwear I strongly recommend wearing it if you...More

Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri
(districts), and the only one not facing onto the
Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated
within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over
one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime
neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side
streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals
criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a
