The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

The Presentation of the Virgin, Justice For All and Adoration of the Golden Calf by Tintoretto are the mainstays of this exhibition in a church.
Entrance fee 3 euros per person. No mask required.
Easy access for mobility challenged persons. Only one major step.
Paintings are very large (15’+), impressive and could be better lit.
Look up commentary on painting before going because nothing is available on site.

This church is famous for the Tintorettos. Worth going out of the way. The walk there from San Marco, about 25 minutes, has lots of restaurants on the way, so you can make a good trip of it.

Tintoretto's local church, and the site of his tomb, is right up at the northern edge of the islands. where Canareggio meets the lagoon. It is thirty minutes from San Marco and twenty from the Rialto: a 'must see' if you have come to appreciate Tintoretto and a church worth a walk. [TIP: make sure you have a decent map before you set off, unlike me!]

Tintoretto created some incredible pictures for this church: on either side of the apse, 'The Worship of the Golden Calf' faces a 'Last Judgement' which is the equal of the majestic 'Paradise' in the Doge's Palace. 'The Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple', 'St Peter's Vision of the Cross' and 'The Miracle of St Agnes' are all superb.

The brick Gothic church, with its high arches, plain roof and impressive apse, remains a place of worship and peace. There are other beautiful things, including the photograph of the Bellini madonna that was stolen in 1993! The entry is 3 euros - well worth the admission price and a long walk!

Madonna Dell Orto is famed for 30 years of major works by Tintoretto and its statue of the Virgin Mary recovered from the vegetable garden from which the church gets its name. The outside is far from grand: inside, its simplicity of form and lack of decoration makes for a peaceful and uncomplicated setting for Tintoretto’s work. It’s close to the Orto vaporetto stop and worthy of a few minutes of your time. A walk back through the old Jewish quarter of Cannaregio to the Guglie vaporetto stop complements your journey of discovery.

There is a lot of history in Venice and a lot of it is tucked away in places very few tourists go. I recommend that you break away from the routine of typical spots to visit in Venice and take some time to see Madonna Dell'Orto especially if you are interested in Venetian renaissance art and Tintoretto in particular. You will get to see amazing masterpieces from Tintoretto in the setting in which he intended that they be placed and you get to see the final resting place of the master himself, not far from his home and in his parish church. Visiting here also gives you a view of the city that very few of the millions who come here every year ever get to see. Do yourself a favour as well and get a local, licenced guide. A Guide In Venice is the service we have used on two trips now and Fernando and his collegue Helene were both superb. Roberta with Walks Inside Venice is also an excellent choice. Check out their websites and see if their preset tours appeal to you but remember these guides are real pros and they will adjust to meet your special wishes of places to see.

This church is a little away from the centre and from the outside doesn't seem that different to many others.

Don't be fooled however, for here is one of the major achievements along with his tomb.

The church of Madonna dell'Orto was originally erected in the mid-14th century, under the direction of Tiberio da Parma, who is also buried in the interior.

There have been inevitable later alterations, in particular the magnificent sanctuary which is decorated with paintings by Tintoretto who is buried in the adjacent chapel. There are other paintings of note throughout the church.

Restoration of the church began under Austrian rule in the 1840s and finished in 1869, by which time Venice had become part of the unified Kingdom of Italy.

There is a small admission charge, but it is well worth it to explore this fine church.

We visited this lovely church which was once Tintoretto's parish church. It is off the tourist track so was quiet and peaceful. The aintings are magnificent and we found it an intensely enjoyable and spritual experience. non flash photography is allowed.
