The area
Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

For me, this bridge is the Entrance to Venice. By passing the bridge, you leave the surrounding of the railway station and enter the city. The bridge itself has nothing special and it is usually totally crowded as it is at the beginning of the city near the railway station, the bus stops and the parking lots.

Everybody who visit in Venice wants see at least Rialto's bridge. This one is smaller and not so crowdy or popular for tourists to visit? But at least it's beautiful as a lighter design. You can find that bridge if you are willing to walk / use more time by walking (instead to travel by boats via canal grande).

The bridge is named after the Discalced (barefoot) Carmelites, a religious order that had settled in the area around 1600. Their church Santa Maria di Nazareth is also called Scalzi church. The stone bridge was inaugurated in 1934 replacing an older structure built during Austrian rule. The one arch bridge, one of four spanning the Grand Canal is functional. Its main purpose is to link the railway and bus stations.

Plan on heavy foot traffic on both this bridge and the Constitution Bridge as they both border the train station. It's quite wide and connects the districts of Cannaregio with Santa Croce. Crossing over (from the direction of the train station) the popular area of San Croce and San Polo are easy to access.

One of my favorite bridges over the Grand Canal because it rises so high. It takes a little effort to climb and walk across but that does not deter the masses of tourists who cross the bridge all the time. The views from on top are extraordinary.

Beautiful bridge that crosses the Grand Canal. Lovely place to photograph the canal and watch the boats go by. Lots of nice shops, restaurants and churches on the immediate vicinity.

This is one of the only four bridges on Canal Grande, it’s the first you see arriving in Venice by train because is a few steps from the railway station of Santa Lucia.
It was completed last century for the replacement of an ancient Austrian bridge.

The bridge was built in 1934. The name translates as Barefoot Bridge. The name appeared because of the eponymous church of barefoot Carmelite monks, located nearby.

This is the first main bridge that crosses the Grand Canal by the Train station. Be warned it is a task if you have to haul luggage across it, So, give yourself some extra time. It is beautiful from the top so take time to enjoy them.

The train station and the vibrations by these trains can seriously get this grand bridge unstable. Renovate it. And get some other bridge for train passengers. This should only be for tourists.

¿El puente degli scalzi es accesible para personas en silla de ruedas?
Written 19 November 2023
Olá, tudo bem? queria tirar uma dúvida e espero que vc possa me ajudar.
Estamos indo a veneza eu e meu esposo.

Which bridge would be easier to cross with luggage, ponte d'scalzi or ponte della costituzione?
