I have been to Venice many times but had never previously stayed in this area. For various reasons, we chose a hotel in this interesting part of Venice. Within easy reach of Piazzale Roma, the train station and the waterbus stops, I found Santa Croce to be far more attractive than I imagined. There are several pretty little churches in... More

Nice neighborhood. There are churches and other attractions, but at the same time there's a shoe store, barber shop, hardware store etc. Actual Venetians hang out in the square.

Amazing building with lovely views outside and in. It isn't as crammed with tourist as you would think. Be aware of the pushy older woman at the main entrance who has a good scam going as she pretends to be the person in charge as she takes money from people going into the building, I must of seen her make... Our hotel was within this district which was nice to be away from a lot of the crowds. It's a nice area to wander around in and see another side of Venice.

In a rented apartment, in Corte Canal, living like a local, this part of town seems to be off the main tourist track. 5 minute walk to the railway station, 10 minutes to Piazza Roma. Through the maze of streets bridges and canals, a fifteen minute walk gets you to the Rialto. There's a Conad supermarket for fresh food and... More

Not far from the train station, this neighbourhood does have some busy areas, but so long as you avoid the main thoroughfares with the yellow signs directing everyone to and from the station, you can find some lovely quiet corners. We particularly liked the campo San Giacomo dell'Orio where we enjoyed a picnic (the co-op on the corner of the... More

We stayed here at a beautiful hotel in this wonderful neighborhood in Venice- the truth be told we didn't want to visit the tourist spots as the quaint charm and beauty along with very nice local restaurants and shops obviates the need to go outside our home away from home. We felt like native Venetians and loved the area

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
