We know the island well and we spent three days there. We stayed at Lato Azzurro and ate at La Bacan, the first is the only place to stay and the latter is the only place to eat. Very simple.

With the free bikes you can discover the island but remember nowhere to eat.

You can enjoy the beach where all the Venetians go in their boats.

It is very busy over the weekends, so you will enjoy it better during the week.

About the same size a Venice but with the housing and population of a small village, this makes for a refreshing half day break away. Take the No. 13 ferry to Ponte Nove (there's a ferry to ferry exchange at Capannone) then a 10 min.walk up to the 'fort'and north shore. We got there at noon and it was magical to hear the noontime bells floating over from Venice, Burano, Torcello and Treporti. Then back down the centre of the island (the Maps.Me app shows all the paths) through the marshlands which is fantastic for bird-life (we 'bagged' a Marsh Harrier) until you reach the road. Cross over to the coastal footpath (with great views over the outer islands) and follow this down to to Porte Massimillian for a well-earned drink at the Al Bacan, where they serve the islands' own wine, thence a 10 min walk back the ferry at Capannone. About 3 hours all round including stops.

Just a short vaporetto trip from the hustle and bustle of Venice, is this wonderful island. It has lovely walks round the island, you can either do the long way round or anti clockwise and get to the beach quicker, where you will find a bar doing superb food and wine.

there are plenty of picnic spots along the walk, plus a wonderful church and fields and fields full of vegetables. It really is not a place to be missed.

Fed up of the crowds of tourists and endless souvenir shops in central Venice? The island of St Erasmo could be the perfect antidote. Here you will find nothing but fields of aubergines, peppers, tomatoes and the famous St Erasmo artichokes - "the vegetable gardens of the Serenissima". There really isn't much to see but you can spend a very peaceful afternoon exploring by foot or bike. You can hire bicycles from the cooperative Lato azzurro (turn right from the main vaporetto station and then follow the main road). Hire cost is 5 Euros for the first 2 hours, then 1 euro for each hour after that. Helmets aren't provided but you won't meet much in the way of traffic. You can cycle round the island in about an hour and enjoy unique views across the lagoon to mainland Venice. It may be worth printing a map before you go as the signs on the island don't provide much information - I never did find the Maximilian Tower! I would recommend visiting the small but beautiful church. There aren't any shops to speak of but Lato azzurro has a restaurant. Take the Vaporetto 13 from Fondamenta Nuove to get there - they only run every hour though so do check the return time when you disembark to avoid a long wait to come back!

Visiting the Sant’Erasmo Island in the Venice Lagoon is for those with extended time during their visit to Venice. It is the Nature Island in the Lagoon with serene and peaceful ambiance only ½ hour from San Marco. Has salt marsh fringes with Bird life & shore crustaceans, while the interior has many neat vegetable farms. Pastoral & charming. Enjoy!

A 25 minute boat ride across the Venetian lagoon brings you to the island where almost all of the local fruits and vegetables sold in Venice are grown. There is virtually nothing to see on Sant'Erasmo, but that is the whole point. After a few days of gawking and pushing through the crowds around San Marco and the Rialto, you may find yourself aching for a rural retreat. It is easy and inexpensive to rent a bike and pedal around the island, enjoying its quiet, and you can even easily find a small cove where you can have a swim.

We stayed in an airbnb on this island, it was so quiet and peaceful. Ideal after a day with the mass of tourists in Venice. Just don't forget the vaporetto time table as there is only one every hour. easy to reach Murano and Burano.

After the hustle and bustle of Venice, take a vaporetto to St Erasmo. Apart from a lovely boat ride, the island is so peaceful and quiet. Loads of fruit and vegetables are grown on the island. Great walks from the drop off points. On the lagoon shore is a great bar serving wine at 8e a litre. You can sit on their patio and look across to Venice on the other side of the lagoon whilst enjoying a nice drink. We took picnic as there are picnic tables on the lagoon side, the then wondered back for another 8 euros worth. Plus a paddle in the water on the way back. (Watch out for the tiny crabs).
It really is a beautiful spot, with cycle hire as well. So if you want a day away from the city, this is the place to go

I'd long wanted to visit Sant'Erasmo , much taken by tales of tranquility and fields full of the fruit and vegetables I'd seen in the Rialto market . I'm very glad I finally got there.

An easy 30 minute Vaporetto ride away ( Line 13 from Fondamente Nova, hourly services all day and night ) there are three alternative stops but we took the first stop, Capanonne , from which it is an easy ten minute walk to the island's only hotel ( Il Lato Azzurro - see reviews ) where you can hire bikes to tour the island and, just past that, the Bar Tedeschi for a drink or meal overlooking a small beach. There is an interesting fort ( opening times vary - check ) and also a small town with a shop and church.

The joy of the island is its unhurried calm and whether on foot or bike, a tour of the deserted roads is a wonderful change from the bustle of Venice. You will see fields full of vegetables; views across the lagoon to the towers of Venice in the distance and bird life galore and a picnic is an obvious option. A gentle bike tour of the circumference of the island will take a little over an hour on flat roads with barely a motor vehicle in sight.

When you have had too much culture and are tired of the crowds in Venice take the number 13 vaporetto and escape to the country. There are three stops to get off at the island. If you get off at Campannone there is a bike hire place, otherwise any stop and just wander around the roads and grassy tracks. There are hardly any cars so it is all very peaceful. The market gardens grow the fruit and vegetables for Venice with artichokes being a speciality. It would be a good idea to take a picnic.
