Address
Neighbourhood: Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

A fun way to get about
The vaporetto is a fun way to get about. The boats arrive frequently and, though crowded, always had enough room for everyone when we travelled. You can enjoy great views of Venice from the water and save yourself some walking too. At first, we didn't understand how to validate a ticket, but you just hold it up to the machine, the light goes green and the gate opens. We would have appreciated clearer signs for this! Make sure you check what moneysaving passes are available in case you can save some money.

    Venice ferries
We used the public transport ferry system as our mode of sightseeing. Bought a 48-hour ticket. Used the No: 1 and 2 ferry to cruise the main canal and also the outer rim of Venice. Did a loop after dark. We took the No: 12 across to Murano and Burano. Conveniently located just outside the rail station. Only drawback is the ferries can get very crowded at peak times.

    Water public transportation
Whilst not particularly cheap its the cheapest way of getting around Venice's waterways. Water taxis are extremely expensive. Passes can be bought: €7.5 75 mins, €21 for a 24 hour pass; €30 for a 48 hour pass; €40 for a 72 hour pass. Sometimes they can be quite crowded and you may be required to stand as there is limited seating. We used the ACTV to get to and from Venezia as well as visit Torino, Torcello and Burano.

    Grand Canal boats
We found this boat service an excellent way to see Venice. The trip along the Grand Canal is worth it just to see the architecture, which is amazing. We paid 35 Euros for a 48-hour pass which was well worth it as single tickets are 9.5 Euros. The boats were often crowded but we never failed to get on one. They seem to come along every 5-10 minutes.

Worth the cost as water travel is expensive
Had a 24 hr pass. Definitely well worth the cost. We travelled through the grand canal and took in all the sites. On top of that, we travelled to Murano Burano and Lido. We did this instead of booking a pre booked trip as we prefer to do things at our own pace. They do get very busy as expected but are very regular and a nice change to see Venice from the water as well as land. If you buy on line first i think it’s a little cheaper. Just a point to note, if you did this it gives you a QR code. This is not your actual ticket, you must scan it at the machines to release your tickets.

    Research the Timetables and Routes
Loved touring on the boats but make sure you know where the routes go . We got on a boat late at night and thought it would turn around but it kept going and we exceeded the time on the ticket and had to buy a new ticket to go back. It was cold and windy.

    Too busy
Bought a 3 day ticket in order to visit the Islands but also to make our way around Venice without having to walk everywhere, plus to save our legs after a long day touring. Boats can be exceptionally busy to the point we felt cattle being herded into a barn. They give priority to locals which in some ways I can understand if commuting to work etc however they charge tourists a more expensive rate which make it unfair.

Great way to see the main canals but ticket operation is dodgy at best
An excellent way for getting around the main parts of Venice but it does not go up the "back streets" so to speak. To see the smaller canals you will need to take a Gondola or a water taxi. We bought a 24 hour pass and the good thing is that it does not start until you first use it so we actually got use on the second morning of our trip as well. Be warned though; the ticket scanning machines are very temperamental and the kiosk staff are not especially helpful. We had bought our tickets online before arriving and printed off. The scanner to validate the ticket and the scanners to gain entry to the boats would not work. All the ticket office staff would say (at three different offices) was to go to the gate and keep scanning until it worked, which it never did! I thought that it might be my printer but not so as there were many others having the same problem and they had purchased tickets locally. It seems to be a regular problem. Get ready to get on board via the exits or double jump the entry gates.

Great way of getting around Venice and the islands
We bought a 48hr ticket for 35 euros for a weekend trip and definitely made the most of it especially when the rain started We went to Murano Burano and the Lido de Venice as well as around the whole of Venice and stayed on during the showers It can get very busy but it is easy to understand where they are going

Whilst staying in Venice, we decided to spend a few days at the lido. We couldn't find a machine that would allow us to buy a ticket or a member of staff willing to help us. We visited the website, bought a 3 day pass each (€40 each) and then used the code on a machine which then printed a ticket. This was challenging so make sure you do your research before travelling.

You must validate a ticket before getting on an ACTV boat as many people have been fined €50 whilst onboard regardless of whether or not you have paid for a ticket. To do this, put your ticket on the scanner and wait for it to show a green light. You don't need to scan on arrival at your destination.

The reason I am writing this review is tourists pay more than locals and then are made to queue in a separate line. Locals are let on first and then, if there is room, tourists are allowed on. We have found staff and people on the cramped boats to be both rude and bullying. One lady pushed my wife to move her out of the way. Such a shame as it has out a sour taste on our trip.

It's public transportation - it is what it is! It gets really crowded and smelly and you have to wait a long times. But the views as you travel beat any municipal bus in the world!

We used them to get to Burano and Murano and take a longer route to get a tour of the lagoon and it was great!

Definitely buy a pass, but do you math on how much you really need so you don't overbuy.

We loved how the routes are integrated with Google Maps and if you put in your destination Google will let you know exactly your options of routes and walking to get to your destination in the fastest time.

We used the Actv a few times in Venice. It was punctual, and some staff was helpful, while others weren't at all (we stayed on Murano, so had to take luggage to and from the island). Sometimes they were very crowded and other times they weren't. One day they had limited service due to fog, which we didn't find out until we hit the end of the line (I'm sure they made an announcement in Italian). We arrived where we needed to, and things, overall, went very smoothly, so I can't really complain.

This is ridiculous, have been around the world nothing like this. Avoid the mobile application, have issued a 3dqy ticket yesterday morning and 24hrs later (now), I have already paid 3 single tickets to manage get back to my hotel because the app and/or the machine is not working. No support at the stations, no support in the telephone and a ridiculous system saying that you have to write an email to them which actually send template ridiculous answers. The city is great.

Four things to note about Vaparetti

1. They are public transport so not all that comfortable and prone to delays crowding and impatient staff. Answer: buy the correct ticket. Work out how long you are there and get the right one. Like buses they fill up and the next one may be full too. And they are irregular. That’s life!!! If you are going off the main islands to outlying islands plan ahead for off peak times or you will have to deal with the crush just like the tube in London.

2. The alternatives are expensive. Water taxis are hideously expensive. Gondolas are a rip off and very slow. Answer: I suggest that you get out a map and work out routes across the islands using an optimum mix of walking, Vaporetti and Traghetti. (Do use these brilliant ferry gondolas across the canals. They are cheap quick and great.. carry cash actually coin for these) and in this way you will avoid all the annoying waiting around. Also: Note Point four below as some routes go one way and others the opposite so there can be options and you can see these in the app.

3. On a Vaparetto. ALWAYS tap ON and tap OFF. It’s not complicated and if you have an issue tapping on then note the stop and if accosted by security tell them the tap on at such and such is “kaput”

4. The route map timetables and whole set up for Vaparetti is confusing and the ACTV app is garbage except for buying the ticket on line. answer: If you want an app that actually works shows the routes and stops real time then download CHEBATEO on Google store or Apple Store. It’s great and it’s what the locals use and it’s also in English

Good luck

Although the stereotype of 'get around Venice by gondola' is what many picture in their heads when someone mentions the canals, the 85 euro and up standard gondola price covers only a short ride in one area. Once one realizes that there is really no way to easily get around the city other than on foot, the Vaporetto is a decent option.
It is a usually very crowded large water taxi that takes you around the grand canal, stopping fairly frequently. People get on and off, so you usually quickly get a seat, and then often can upgrade to one of the prime seats in the open on the bow if you are on long enough.
From here you get a magnificent view of the city, more comprehensive than what a gondola can show you, and something you would never get on foot.
Make sure you know ahead of time what ticket you want, as they can intentionally or inadvertently overcharge you.
And lthough the previous reviewer took offense, this is public transportation. Every mode in Italy requires a mask: airplane, train, bus and water taxi. Be prepared.

We learnt how to travel on these waterbuses on the previous visit. Its so easy, they arrive to the minute as per the timetable which I printed out before I arrived. WE took a 48 hour ticket so we could make good use of it. Up and down the grand canal. over to Burano and Murano all included in the the 30 euro price. Yes they are a bit grubby and old but its the only way to travel, most times we went to the back so could take in the views in the fresh air. The crews with the ropes at each stop are brilliant but don't seem to have a sense of humour. The captains of these boats do a great job in weaving between gondolas, other buses, water taxis etc. Well done

Vaporetto is the main public transportation option for downtown Venice. The boats run every 10-15 mins, and you can get around easily once you get to know the main lines. While wandering around the city and the islands it's easy to ride it 2 or three times per day, so it's definitely worth it trying the daily, 2 day, 4 day or weekly pass. Boats go back and forth the Canal Grande, but also to the main islands like Giudecca, Murano, Burano. Forget the water taxi if you want to have a real venetian experience :)

In my opinion this is a must for exploring Venice! We purchased the 72 hr tickets at 45€ each and they were a great value buy! There is no limit to how many times you use the ticket or which bus line you use them on. We went over to Lido and Murano islands covered in the price of this ticket. Various bus lines operate in either direction along and around the Grand Canal and you can hop on or off whichever stop takes your fancy! The boats run until quite late so you can do a night time ride if you wish. They run very frequently too so you are never left waiting too long at a stop. The boats do get busy at peak times but unless you need to sit it’s a great way to get around. Would highly recommend.

This is a PUBLIC transport system and is the same as any big city, other than the fact it's on water not roads. Expect it to be crowded, noisy and bumpy

Wide coverage in Venice, clear timetable etc. We found they stick to timetable.

Single tickets are 9.50 euros, which is (very) expensive if you only want a short trip. Daily passes are available.

We've been to Venice several times, and the cost of tickets had increased massively over the last couple of years.

(Private water taxi are easy to get, but much, much more expensive)
