Top ways to experience Ca' Macana and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

The masks were absolutely beautiful-there is NO doubt about that. But the woman teaching the class really seemed like she hated children. My kids were so excited for this class and the first thing they said when it was over was “jeez. That lady hated us” It would have been a much better experience if they had someone who actually enjoyed working with children leading the class. From the second they walked in she barked orders at them, explained barely anything, didn’t introduce herself or explain why mask making was special to Venice, etc. They left with cool masks, but a sub par experience.

Fantastic little chain of mask shops, I believe 3 in total. Service was great and staff very helpful picking out genuine hand made masks for our children.
Be sure to seek out one of these stores because the quality of the masks is so good compared to many of the cheap stands and stores you see throughout Venice.

This is a skip. I was just there with my 3 kids….and the instructor was so very unkind. She barked at us non-stop. We were all scared to move. I don’t know if it was because it was the end of the day, or because I had young children. When we left 2 of my 3 girls cried. An hour was not enough to complete these mask, especially since different groups come in the entire time and the instructor stops and goes over and gets them set up and shows them the process. Barking 10 more minutes, 5 more minutes was so unpleasant. Several of us messed up our mask at the end because we were trying to finish quickly. We had just started decorating our mask when we were told 10 minutes left. We’ve been in Italy for 3 weeks and done various cooking classes and other classes, and this was by far the worst experience we’ve had. I’d look for a different location that allows more than 1 hour for the entire process (especially with children).

Great shop for authentic handmade Venetian masks. We were looking for souvenirs of Venice and this shop did not disappoint. Stay away from the Chinese made and fake masks sold in shops around saint Marc’s and the realito bridge. These are the real thing. This is a shop is in a quiet part of town. Definitely worth a trip.

We recently took a mother-daughter trip to Venice, Italy. Our daughters were all between the ages of 14-16. Looking to break up the museum experience, we decided to have our daughters do the ABC's course at Ca' Macana. This experience was the highlight of the trip. Our teacher was Florita (sp?) and she was so incredibly patient with our girls. I know this is somewhat of an expensive activity but it was worth every cent. Although the course generally takes about an hour, we were there for nearly two hours. We never felt rushed and Florita pulled out all the stops for our girls. The finished product was amazing and each of our daughters said that it was their favorite activity of our trip! I highly recommend Ca' Macana. They can make an artist out of anyone!! :)

We took part in the ABC workshop as a family. The workshop was fun but it was very rushed and you felt under pressure the whole time to hurry up. However, we were pleased we took part on the course and had fun designing the masks. Would suggest you go along having an idea of a design for the mask.

Best place for authentic Venetian masks. Selection is great and quality is superb. They have something for everyone. Haven’t tried the classes yet, but they seem really fun. A must see.

Cà Macana has a few locations in Venice, where you can even decorate your own papier mache mask to your liking. The company designed masks for Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, and have very reasonable prices for authentic work. You're also allowed to take pictures in the masks (most stores forbid it) so it's a fun shopping destination. You can also decorate your own mask... when I return to Venice, I'm definitely going to do it! There’s even an online shop if you’re looking to decorate your place or for a costume ball.

My biggest tip for purchasing a mask is to shop around. My boyfriend picked up the first one he saw at Leon d’Oro near the Ponte di Rialto, and ended up finding the same one at Cà Macana for half the price! As long as you fall in love with an artisan’s work. It’s easy to spot the difference between a mass-produced imported product from an authentic Venetian mask. Look for irregularities in the underside and decoration, and make sure that your mask looks unique from other similar models in the shop- it should be one of a kind!

This mask shop has something for everyone, and more to the point when you are in Venice-at every price. Starting around 19 euros and going up to 120+, there are masks covering every inch of space in the workshop I visited in Dorsoduro, and if you can't find something there visit the larger workshops around the city. The staff was helpful, letting me spend way too long deciding what I wanted without making me feel burdensome, and carefully packing my purchases for the trip home. The stuff here is far better than the by-comparison unoriginal and cheap looking tat available in the Piazza San Marco. Tip-if you by a rolling venice card don't forget to show it for a 10% discount.
