About
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a lay confraternity founded in 1478. The popularity of the cult of St. Roch, whose remains had been in the possession of the brotherhood since 1485, contributed to the latter’s rapid expansion to the extent of it becoming the richest Scuola of the city. At that point it was decided to build a new monumental headquarters and engage Tintoretto to decorate it with his most celebrated pictorial cycle, illustrating episodes from the New and Old Testaments. It is the only one of the historic Scuole Grandi to have survived the fall of the republic. It is a unique site, where over 60 paintings are preserved in their original setting in a building that has hardly undergone any alteration since its construction. The confraternity is still active today, carrying out its traditional charitable duties as well as looking after its extraordinary artistic patrimony.

Neighbourhood: San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.

This has been my second visit and each time has continued to identify aspects of interest. Opportunity to look at the art of the ceiling through mirrors available to the public increases its uniqueness.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 8 November 2023
- John PMelbourne, Australia1,161 contributionsCan’t believe I left it so long before visiting! There is so much to see in Venice that some places fall through the cracks, no reason why you don’t visit, you just don’t get round to it this trip! Well this Scuola was in that category for me! What a goose to leave something so amazing so long before visiting! We were spellbound and without liking every Tintoretto one had to be impressed by his industry. Overall this is an amazing visit. Do buy the inexpensive guidebook, you will appreciate it so much more! Now to plan for a return visit!Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 January 2024
- Jinty059Glasgow, United Kingdom169 contributionsAn absolute must visit!!Spent time in the Scuola on our first day in Venice, exploring the area we were staying. Absolutely fantastic building, so much to look at and admire. Was reasonably quiet at about 11.00 a.m. in March so got to see everything in detail. Get the leaflets to read about the place. The paintings and ceiling are so beautiful, impressive, stunning, amazing and sad. If that is not enough, you have all the remarkable wood carvings and the lamps, oh what lamps. Some really talented people years ago. Climb up the stairs and find even more to look at, including the preserved finger of St. Andrew?? Well worth an hour or so to be completely blown away.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 March 2024
- fredpRednal, United Kingdom170 contributionsNOT TO BE MISSED!If you can only find time for one stop in Venice then this should be it even though it is a little off the beaten track. Words cannot describe the vast number of artworks, their quality and size or the surroundings that they are in. On the first floor the paintings reign supreme but do not be fooled. Ascend the stairs and prepare to be awestruck by the ceiling and paintings of the grand hall. Not to be missed and great value for money when comparing the entrance fee to other sites.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024
- Laurene M389 contributionsDelving into Tintoretto, the artistWe recommend Visiting this beautiful building showing a multitude of Tintoretto’s paintings, many of them in the high ceilings of the two floors. Mirrors are supplied to help visitors see the ceiling paintings. The Scuola was a fraternal organization, dedicated to charity and Tintoretto was known for volunteering his work to the organization. There’s also a movie on how experts renovate old paintings like the ones in this building.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 May 2024
- caroline2Paris, France515 contributionsIncredible paintings!!The incredible paintings on the walls and the ceilings from Tintoretto are certainly worth a visit. Take advantage of the hand mirror at your disposition in order to have a better look at the ceiling without getting a neck ache... Also the grand staircase and the beautiful floor are stunning. There was some restauration at the time we went with an interesting explanation of the whole process.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 July 2024
- GAR967 contributionsA must seeI’ve visited Venice two years running and had to make a return trip to the scuola this year because I loved it so much before. It was just as amazing second time around. The paintings are brilliant, as is the gilding and wordwork. It’s also pretty quiet too and there are lots of chairsVisited September 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 September 2024

The ceiling is amazing and having a mirror to view it is a great idea. Toilets and gift shop, plus little cafes and shops nearby.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 19 September 2024

It seemed that the walls and ceilings were filled with Tintoretto paintings depicting the life of Christ. The grand upper hall was stunning - the ceiling especially. Some compare it to the Sistine Chapel. Lesser known, obviously.
Combine a visit here with the Frari Church, which is just around the corner.

Beautiful place with amazing Tintoretto’s art. Gorgeous building. Calming and relaxing. It took maybe around 45 minutes to go around but was a great museum. Both paintings and sculptures are exquisite - the museum was easy to find and everything about it was fantastic. Probably suitable for adults (or kids extremely keen on art!) because it’s not very “entertaining” or “interactive”, but for an art lover it’s a real treat. It doesn’t make it often to Venice’s “top things to do”, and I don’t know why - it totally should.

The school is beautiful but.... First of all there are several restoration sites, one of which concerns Tintoretto's most important painting "the crucifixion", the main reason why we went to visit the school. The painting can only be imagined, the restoration began in April 2023 and will end in 2025. Despite this, the entrance ticket remains at full price, i.e. 10 euros. No guide is given, and the paintings do not have labels, you enter quite unaware of what you are looking at. We should guide tourists better and give them more information or put QRcodes for each painting. I was very disappointed.

An incredible collection of Tintoretto's work. Viewing them in the massive room above the carved wooden figures was literally awesome. Don't miss the relics on the second floor. The ornate containers that hold them are incredible works of art in their own right.

You will never see a more grand achievement than Tintoretto's work. A unified work, from the bottom floors to the grand ceiling, this storytelling in magnificent artwork is a wonder to behold. Make sure to get the literature or take a tour to understand the depth of this masterpiece. Lesser known than the Sistine Chapel but no less wonderful.

Definetky worth a visit. €10 but worth it. Absolutely breathtaking paintings and the intricacy of how they tell a story is great knowledge. Def use a mirror (at end of hall level one) to see paintings on ceiling and hire audio guide. Wasn’t busy as well so nice relaxed way to spend an hour.

The Scuola di San Rocco is a 15th century building built for the lay confraternity dedicated to St. Roch. Tintoretto was hired to paint the walls within this building and for some 20 years, painted 60 scenes from the Old and New Testaments which remain in place today. Start in the ground floor hall, and its two side rooms, before heading upstairs to the Sala dell’Albergo where the Scuola's governing body held its meetings.

The previous commentator provided so much historical material, it is clear that the person thoroughly prepared for the visit. I am a visual person and “love” more with my eyes. The ceiling and walls are of amazing beauty with scenes from the Old and New Testaments. The marble floor is also beautiful. The only thing is that restoration is currently underway in Scuol, which is still a little distracting. Since after lunch I also visited the Doge’s Palace, where all the most beautiful things are also at the top, my neck hurt in the evening. The entrance ticket costs 10 euros. I'm still not a big fan of Tintoretto - I like brighter and lighter colors, but Scuola San Rocco is a true gem for art lovers.

This place is so often overlooked but it is worth searching out. It is astonishing to think that Tintoretto created the paintings here in situ - on our visit we had the added bonus of the treasury being open too. There are quite a lot of stairs but it is worth the effort if you can manage it.

What is the best time of day to visit to avoid long lines? Thanks!
Written 10 August 2016
Sorry for delayed answer. I was there at 2PM or around - no line at all. Generally in Venice second half of the day is more convenient time for visiting: those people who came from continent for one-day trip usualy got tired after morning run through museums and churches -)

The Hotel looks stunning!
How long is it to walk to the Rialto Bridge and St Mark's Basilica?
Written 12 January 2015
A there seems to be some confusion. Just taking the distance and walking time as has been indicated it is essential, unless you are prepared to allow time to get lost get a vapoetto. We have been visiting for a dozen years and still happily gett lost! The closest vapoetto stop to the sculls is San Toma and a number 1 will take you to either Rialto or going the other way to San Marco. We would always stop at Ca Rezonico to see the super museum, the tranquil garden and, the friendly. Cafe.
Enjoy!
