The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

Came across this peacefull medium sized church with amazing stained glass windows by pure accident. Worth the little visit. There is a large square out side the front with a well in the middle. There is also a small boat yard with Gondolas. All could be worth a visit.

A Church honouring two Saints (Gervasius and Protasius, which slurred together somehow comes out as Trovaso in Venetian dialect), its well worth a visit for its double entrances (to keep feuding families apart) and its impressive interior, including a few Tintorettos, although the lace curtains on some windows strikes a bit of a discordant note. There's a decent wine shop just across the canal, and the gondola repair shop is right nearby. Entry is free.

While this church is well worth a visit just on it's own merits, an evening of sacred music made it rather special indeed. It was part of a series of 4 Sacred Music Concerts held in December.
The night I attended featured a guest soloist on the church organ accompanied by a fellow performing Gregorian chants. Sublimely beautiful music with the perfect acoustics of the church.
Yet another reason to visit the city in December.

Chiesa di San Trovaso is a lovely church and the site dates back to the early 11th century. The outside is not great looking, but inside you will be amazed by some of the most beautiful works of art by some incredibly talented artists. One such work is The Last Supper, by Tintoretto, as well as other wonderful works.

This church, which is not on the Chorus Pass and is free to enter, houses works by Domenico and Jacopo Tintoretto. There is a Last Supper by D. Tintoretto and a Temptations of St. Anthony Abbot by Jacopo Tintoretto. There are also works by Palma Il Giovane. It would be a nice, quiet, cool stop on a busy summer day in Venice.

This large church on bank of small canal in Dorsoduro district. Built in 1584 not as ornate inside as others but boasts a painting by Tintoretto.

Situated along a canal and with a huge square in front is San Travaso. The rear of the gondola makers shop faces the square. The church has 2 main entrances – canal side and square side. We heard music, went in and enjoyed an impromptu concert. The church was a peaceful and serene place that day – virtually empty. We were treated to a truly beautiful concert – the organist was practicing. It is a nice example of architecture built in Palladian style. Inside, you’ll find works by both Jacopo and Domenico Tintoretto along with Palma il Giovane.
