The outside of this church is quite beautiful. We did not get a chance to go inside. There were many that I have to describe in that fashion as there are many churches in Venice.

You are on La Giudecca island, the church is pretty pretty, not too much selfiesticks around, AND you have a fantastic view to San Marco, la Dogana. You can have a quick local lunch at the snack next door

Ordinary visitors go to the church and back to the crowd of Venice. Real visitors sit down and admire architecture and paintings and visit monastery, too. It is real pearl with all yards, arcades, trees and gardens. You need enough time and some money for gratuity and for entrance fee to the church. Far more than Palladio and Veronese.

I am with Ruskin in that the Gothic and Romanesque style are better than the Renaissance. However, Palladio did an excellent job designing this church, and the proportions are excellent. Being on Giudecca it has many fewer visitors than the old city, so it is much more peaceful.

Catching a number 2 waterbus will take you to this church. Entrance is €3. The church itself is very attractive and impressive and I really wish I'd left after that, but then we entered the Sacristy...it should come with a warning, because as well as paintings by various artists including Paolo Veronese, on the far wall were about a dozen... This church, located on Guidecca, was commissioned to commemorate the 1576 plague which killed 50,000 people. It is a classically designed Palladian church that was built raised above sea level. Admission is included in the Venezia Unica city pass, as well as the church visit Chorus card.

“Il Redentore” – church of the Holy Redeemer - dominates the skyline of the island of Giudecca. It is a 16th century church and was designed by Andrea Palladio and built as a votive (to fulfill a vow) church to thank God for the deliverance of the city from the plague. Some treasured artwork by Francesco Bassano, Lazzaro Bastiani, Carlo... More

This church on Guidecca was designed by Andrea Palladio, the same architect of Chiesa Di San Giorgio which can be seen two stops before on the #2 Line, as you travel from San Zaccaria just off Piazza San Marco. The white façade is reminiscent of Saint Stae on the Grand Canal, but not as ornate. The interior has good natural... More

I took the short vaporetto (waterbus) journey here from San Giorgio Maggiore and couldn't believe I hadn't bothered coming here before despite several previous visits to Venice. To keep this review brief, I agree with other erudite reviewers who have commented on the balanced proportions and understated beauty of this great church. I think it is Palladio's greatest achievement. The... More

We walked from the Hilton to this rather understated church from the outside, a good example of the Palladio architecture built in the 16th century for the victims of the plaque, has a peaceful and calming interior, and you will not find too many tourists

Staying in Giudecca

Neighbourhood Profile
Giudecca
Giudecca is a retreat for Venetians away from the crowds. Symbolically, six metal teeth represent Venice’s six sestieri (districts); the seventh, Guidecca, points away from the others – part of Dorsoduro, but separated by the Giudecca Canal. Giudecca evolved from a center of shipyards and factories to a quiet residential area with a sprinkling of restaurants and bars. The majestic harmonious Redentore church stands as thanks for delivering Venice from the plague, hosting an annual heartfelt festival.
