Top ways to experience Piazzale Roma
The area
Neighbourhood: Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

    From here: pedestrians only
Piazzale Roma is situated just beyond the Ponte della Libertà, which connects Venice with mainland Mestre. This is the ultimate place in Venice where you can drive your car, ride bus, tram, bicycle, or motorbike. Get off the bus or tram or put your motor vehicle in a parking garage (visitors who don't want to queue at the Piazzale Roma parking garages have already left the car at Tronchetto and have taken the People Mover to Piazzale Roma). From here the assignment of the visitor of Venice is walking, walking, walking. In the direction of Rialto and San Marco or in the direction of Accademia Bridge. At first sight Piazzale Roma is nothing to write home about, with the busses, trams, cars queueing at the parking garages and the flocks of tourists, but it is the glorious starting point of a visit to fairy tale Venice, so a four point rating

Not particularly pretty, but an important location because this is where you will find the train station and the People Mover. It's a good place to start your exploration of the city or to catch a vaporetto. The Grand Canal is here and lots of buses and car parking.

The Place to Come and Go in and around Venice
A great place to arrive and depart Venice. There are trams, buses, taxis and a host of water travel options. A couple of blocks away is the People Mover to the cruise terminals, ask for directions, it is not easy to spot. The porters will help with transporting luggage across the bridge to the train station. They will offer a per luggage price, but you can negotiate if you feel it is too high.

Area contains a nice little park area
I was in Venice October 2023 with partner celebrating his 40th birthday and whilst exploring the city we came across this area. After getting a water taxi in from the airport and spending our in the main part did Venice amongst the windy lanes and canals it seemed like this area was a different place all together with the road bus and trains station and traffic but my reason for reviewing is the little park/gardens we found over the way from the bus station with its little cafes it was nice to grab a drink and slice of pizza sitting in the sun. Nice to stop of at if in that area.

This is a massive and chaotically busy bus station with heavy bus and taxi traffic. Volume must be over 200 buses per day. Lanes are labelled but looking for where you want to catch your next bus is somewhat bewildering.

On our trip, we needed to transfer to/from a vaporetto (water bus). On arrival, we managed to secure a luggage porter; however, on departure (on a tight schedule to catch a flight), there were no porters to be found. This was around 0710h.

A nice aspect to all this is that vaporetto passes were also valid on the airport bus. Often is was not necessary to present your pass (vaporettos and buses).

This is right next to water taxi station and this is where the bus from the airport drops you off. So going anywhere from here - you would end up seeing this. It is a beautiful place - but true about other paces in Venice. Spending 15 min in this bridge and taking photographs is all you need here.

There were two lanes, but I followed everyone and lined up for the bigger one.
When my uncle was bidding, he used to give me two lanes of rides evenly, but after the women started bidding, many of them stopped going at all.
I'm just going because I'm not getting on.
No one can ride for about an hour.
I hear yelling in front of me. If you don't like the lady at the ticket office, don't ride! Hold on. It's like that.
I'll be here in five minutes. So I calmed down, but I came 15 minutes later.
Also, no one is allowed on board.
He starts making noises again, and the woman in charge of the bidding goes home! I returned the previous person with this attitude.
A mild-mannered American gentleman
Quietly I said, 'If you don't put it up there, refund your family ticket.' And the ticket official said something like, 'You have the right to be in Priority Lane,' and the Young Mom pushed an American stroller.
Then we have rights. The pair moved to Priority Lane.
Mr. Young Mom, you guys have rights, right? He called me that. Because you're elderly.
Bidgers, you can't. and
What are your priorities?
Locals, workers, they say.
As a matter of fact, non-Americans, Brits and Asians pass for free.
I said I'd get a refund for my 2DAY pass.
The lady at the ticket office has grown quieter, but you're going back to the tourist lane! He said quietly and left. The announcement was made in 15 minutes, but it was too late to wait and I decided to walk. Sunlight that stings your skin. Half an hour walk to the hotel,
I had a complete heat stroke. My arms and face are disgustingly blackened, I'm still thirsty and feverish.
Fun Venice ruined.
Is riding a Pavoletto a time-consuming reverse? I have to walk to the stop in front of me.

You go back to the tourist lane?

Used this bus stop to take a bus to Marco Polo airport. Buying tickets was painless but the wait was out in the open where the sun was searing hot. Quick and efficient transfer to the airport. Be prepared to haul your luggage across bridges as you did all through venice.

Most of the people leave their car at Piazzale Roma. Too expensive. You better leave your car just outside Venice. You will pay only 5.5 Euro a day (plus the ticket for the bus. It's only one stop from Piazzale Roma). We have chosen venicecitypark, but there are many others.

You will at some point come here if you are staying in the historic part of Venice.  Most of the airport buses stop here.  You can then get public transport (water bus) to the historical areas of Venice.  There is a place where you can get a taxi too.  Having said this, on the night I was there I had to wait twenty minutes.  Very few but thankfully the line was not long.  Other than that, not much going on.  Dirty with a few stalls where you can get snacks.  Busy and lively.
