The area
Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

One of the most elegant and picturesque areas. I’ve stayed in an apartment for the last two years here, this year for 7 weeks. The area is busy with people, tourists and locals, bars and restaurants. The artisans shops offer original creativity and many visit here to see the area which appeared in one of the Indiana Jones movies.
It’s an absolute must - gondola rides also available as well as many useful shops.
Get the vaporetto to Ca Rezzonica and you will see for yourselves.

No wonder that Campo San Barnaba was often chosen as a movie location: it is such a lovely place, not exactly a hidden gem but the big crowd usually hangs around Piazza San Marco and nearby areas and not here.
This is where Indiana Jones came out of a manhole in "Indiana Jones and the last crusade" as well as the place where Katharine Hepburn's character in the movie "Summertime" ended up falling into the canal while filming her love interest's workplace.
One trivia concerning the latter: Ms. Hepburn refused to be doubled for that scene and while swimming in the canal contracted an eye infection that tormented her for decades.
I suggest a stop at nearby Caffe' Bar Ai Artisti (feel free to read my review if interested): you can have a nice spritz and a tramezzino while relaxing, daydreaming and enjoying the beauty of amazing and peaceful Campo San Barnaba.

This busy little square can be found a short walk from the Accademia, and with the narrow Calle S Barnaba alongside is another of Venice's charming areas, popular with visitors and locals. Worth including in any walk around the southern part of the city.
Lots of food shops, including a barge selling vegetables and fruit. There is a famous small bridge, Ponte dei Pugni, which has footmarks embedded into it, marking violent fights which used to take place on it between rival factions in the city. Film buffs will be interested to know that this little square was the spot where Katherine Hepburn fell into the canal in the splendid film "Summertime" [1955], known as "Summer Madness" in the UK, and co-starring Rossano Brazzi. If you walk up to the little bridge just off the square, you will see a small antiques shop at the base of the bridge, and this is the shop featured in the film, where Hepburn encounters Brazzi, who owns the shop in the film, and buys a red goblet. When I visited in 2008, the shop was displaying stills from the film and its poster in the window, so Ms Hepburn, Mr Brazzi and the fine film "Summertime" are well remembered here. Very interesting, and quite touching.

Somewhere around the second or third day of my week in Venice, C. San Barnaba became “mine”. I went there every day, after walking and exploring Venice for five or six hours, for a rest and a bottle of water and a glass of Prosecco and to write in my journal until dinner. I also stopped there every morning for a cappuccino before setting out. The waitresses at the little café there knew me by the second day, and by the third didn’t even ask for my order, they just brought me my usual with a smile and a busy but pleasant buongiorno. It was perfect. It is out of the way and doesn’t get the multitude of tourists that other places in Venice get, and in the afternoon mothers bring their kids there to blow off some after-school steam. It was peaceful, pleasant, and a wonderful place to write. The gelateria (Grom) is good, and there are two very nice restaurants there, the Osteria Ristoteca Oniga in the campo itself, and the Ristorante Casin dei Nobili in the adjacent sotoportego. I recognized it as the location of Katherine Hepburn's splash from the movie “Summertime” but didn’t know about the Indiana Jones connection until I got home. I saw endless and unparalleled history and beauty every day in Venice, but the relaxed little Campo San Barnaba became one of my favorite places in the entire city.

This area is lovely and used for a couple of scenes in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Fans will find the Ponte dei Pugni here (the bridge that Indy, Elsa and Marcus cross to get to the library) and the facade of the library where the X marks the spot (which is actually the Church of San Barnaba that houses a Leonardo da Vinci exhibit).
There are a few places to eat here and we had lunch directly opposite the Church of San Barnaba as we quoted lines from the movie. (Big fans!)
A nice area to visit in the Dorsoduro district, not far from the Gallerie dell'Accademia.

Although used in now more famous films, for those of a certain age this square is better known as being a major setting for the Katherine Hepburn film "Summertime" (1955). The little shop with the green awning (see photo) is a real shop, but used in the film as the one where she buys the red Murano goblet. It is also this canal that she falls in and is fished out by the steps (again, see photo).
The square is comparatively quiet for Venice with shops on two sides, including a café and ice cream shop, and the church which is used for exhibitions (currently Leonardo's engineering drawings).

A very picturesque square with a couple of quirky shops and a very reasonably priced bistro directly opposite the church
You will recognise it from the Indiana Jones movie - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (although sadly the church itself is a paid attraction and not actually a library as in the movie!)
Definitely a must see place whilst in Venice as the architecture is fantastic

This beautiful square offers a nice slice of life of the laid back part of Venice. There are 3 bars in the square where you can enjoy a spritz, at least 2 restaurants that cater to locals, some good people watching, and few other shops to wander around in. Not very touristy or crowded, but still lively and atmospheric. A few famous movies have been shot here (Summertime, Indiana Jones & Last Crusade, Italian Job), so the setting is certainly picturesque.

If you are a fan of "Summertime" with Katherine Hepburn you will love going to Campo San Barnaba to see the goblet shop (now a cute toy store) and it's bridge, as well as the steps where she sat and then fell into the canal while taking pictures.

This is exactly the church with a huge library where Indy looked for the knight's shield inscription. The church itself looks very similar to the picture we know from the movie, I think I even found the canal manhole out of which Indy was escaping from the tombs. Inside the church you will not find this great library though :( but exhibition of Leonardo Da Vinci machines. The entry is under charge of few euros and the whole thing takes approx 30 mins to visit.

Bonjour,
j'ai lu sur un blogue qu'il y avait un endroit à Venise dans le Campo San Barnaba où on peut fabriquer son propre masque. Quelqu'un connait l'endroit, l'adresse?
merci!
