About
This was the first “home” of the Holy Shroud after its arrival from Chambéry. San Lorenzo has an extraordinary cupola (completed in 1680) designed by Guarino Guarini and exemplifies the baroque style. The Duke Emanuele Filiberto had the church dedicated to the Saint after the victory of the Battle of San Quintino. In piazza Castello.

This was the church where the shroud was located before it was moved to the Reale Palace. No sign to show where it was once placed.
Would have been a nice visit to a quiet church but for a tour guide who spoke to her group in the church, oblivious to the silence signs.

Although I had read on trip advisor that it was very easy to overlook this church I didnt notice it till the last day of our visit to Turin. The view of the royal palace is so impressive its really easy to miss that small unimposing blue door to the left . At first we were hesitant to investigate as there were no indications on the outside as to what beauty there is inside. So glad we visited this compact but impressive church the original home of the shroud. The cupola is stunning and the small room with display of a copy of shroud an added bonus.

The church of San Lorenzo is located in a place that probably few visitors to Turin will miss: in the corner of Piazza Castello at the end of Via Po and next to the Royal Palace, but it hasn't got a very impressive front facade. It should never be overlooked, though: the interior is an incredible feat of Baroque architecture. The decoration is astonishingly rich. However, it is not the opulence that makes the building so extraordinary, but the sophisticated intricacy of overlapping and interacting architectural forms. In the rhythms and counterpoints of their harmonies, contrasts, turns and flows, there is almost audible music. Those who have been in Cordoba and remember the dome in front of the mihrab in its great mosque will not be surprised looking at San Lorenzo's dome that its architect Guarino Guarini traveled in Spain and studied Moorish architecture there.

All the churches in Torino are free to visit and this one is as stunning as the others. You'll be spoilt for choice and photos, but none of them blur into the others. They're all worth seeing.

Arriving by bus at the Piazza Castello, we made this the first visit of our day. It could not in any way be described as a hidden gem, but with a pretty unobtrusive entrance door at present hemmed in by restoration works, there is no notice of the building within. The Church itself is superb with very ornate plaster works and statuary plus a memorable ceiling. It is very well worth a visit, but beware, it is firmly on the coach and student circuit and try and get there early to enjoy the experience in relative peace. The church is particularly known for being the initial resting place for The Shroud and there are special exhibits relating to this period.

this was the chapel built for the Dukes of Savoy in the Palace next door. Guarino Guarini, brilliant architect and mathematician, designed it and it is simply wonderful . No one else was there when I Visited. It is to the left of the Palazzo Royale entrance and open in the mornings and afternoons.

First of all the entrance is totally free. Once entering the church, you should look upwards in order to see one of the most important architectural jewels in Turin! Must see it.

We stopped there on a Sunday afternoon, there was a choir singing, few people around, the church is a little gem in the middle of Torino. The ceiling and the dome are mesmerising, small, with several altars all finely decorated. IF you are in Torino, it would be a crime not to visit it.
