The highlight in this basilica are the beautiful frescoes, the stone pulpit and the basement with the remnants of the first chapel built by St Giulio. The frescoes are in very good condition in the back of the basilica. They also have St Giulios reflects...More

We took the boat over to the island which is a must if you are staying in Orta. The boat ride was good and it is a frequent and efficient service to and from the island. The basilica is worth seeing and you can then...More

The basilica is wonderful; the architecture is breath-taking. There are many frescoes and statues. There is also a sanctuary worth visiting and a Mascioni pipe organ. KEEP IN MIND: There are some rules on clothing (e.g. hats and short trousers/skirts)

The trip over by boat costs €4.50. The church was stunning and well worth a visit. Also nice to have a wander around the small streets of the island.

Amazing church on the island San Giulio in Lake Orta. Visited after a mass. Pulpit caved in 12th century. Frescos from middle ages well preserved and plentiful. Plain building from the outside but fantastic interior. A must see. Ferries every 15 minutes for €4.5 return

When we visited the church was illuminated and it was very interesting to wander around looking at the ancient frescoes and the statues.

I don't understand the gushing reviews. There's one street with the convent walls on one side and houses on the other. Boring walk, despite the signs about silence and meditation. The church is nothing special other than the pulpit. The crypt is just another saint...More

Tradition says that this was the hundredth and last church founded by Julius of Nicaragua and his brother Giuliano and that in 390 the saint reached the island and killed the dragons that allowed the first church to be built on the island. The modern...More

This is a small church, but WOW! So much in a little area. You need to take a boat ride out there which is fun by itself. And you can walk around the monastery which is quaint, but the church is worth the visit.

This basilica is really the primary attraction on San Giulio Island, and it is worth the stop. Be sure to go down the stairs to see the crypt of St. Julius.
