Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Piazza Motta is the historical center of Orta San Giulio. Under the arcades lining the square on two side, you'll find little shops, cafés, souvenir shops, a foodstore (Pan e Vino), etc. On the lakeside front, boats depart to other villages along Lake Orta and to San Giulio Island. On Wednesday monring, there is a market on the square
. If you're lucky, you can rent some of the apartments overlooking the square during your stay on Lake Orta - very much recommended.

Orta is very little and this is the heart of the small town. It is a little jewel with the only bad spot of a old hotel closed and not refurbished. For the rest is just lovely, with the bars, the palace of Broletto and the fantastic view on the lake with S.Giulio island.

This is the main piazza in the town of Orta. It is lined with shops - mainly catering to tourists, and cafes. It is a charming spot to relax and stare at the lake with it's lovely island.

This is where the Italians flock to on their bank holiday, sitting in the sunshine overlooking the lake and enjoying a meal,( or a coffee or an ice cream) and watching the world go by. On other days it was quieter but still just as relaxing!

This village is worth a nice walking tour and maybe a meal if so inclined. We stopped in on our way from Lake Maggiore to Modena. We visited Chisa Santa Maria Assunta above town which was very nice, but otherwise it's just nice to stroll around town here or take the ferry over to Isola di San Giulio. The most difficult thing we encountered was parking which is limited. Don't attempt to drive into the old city. We parked northeast of town in the lagoon area in a small lot on SP229 near the restaurant Luci sul Lago. It was about a 2 mile walk from there into town. I believe there is also parking at the train station.

We wanted to visit Lake Orta and ended up arriving there at around 4:30 in the afternoon. The Piazza Motta was buzzing with excitement due to a wonderful Scottish/Italian wedding complete with bagpipes and kilts. The groom was a Scottish and the bride was an Italian beauty. We watched the procession into the church and then afterward the wedding party with bagpipes playing were boating around the lake. There are a number of small, quaint places to eat with reasonable prices. But if you are wanting more than a scoop of gelato then go to Ristorante Venus. When you open the menu there are about half a dozen pages with pictures of every type of ice cream sundae you could image. We enjoyed looking into the small shops and wandering along the lakeside. We didn't make it to island, but we plan to go back. It is a nice way to spend a relaxing weekend or day. We plan to check out the hotels as well.

Orta San Giulio is a delightful small town on the lakeside of Orta. You will have to do some walking and will be challenging for anyone not in good physical health. It is worth it though. Absolutely charming and completely authentic. It is the boat staging post to get to the island opposite which, to be honest, was not worth going to. The ice-cream shop in the main square, actually shown in this photo, is one of the best we went to in all of Italy and we went to loads!

A stunning square with Lake Orta on one side and bars, restaurants, cafes and shops on the other three. Get gelato from Eliot's and watch the world go by!

In Orta you'll find many picturesque narrow streets, alleys, and several cute piazzas of which Piazza Motto is the largest and best. There are appropriate amount of shops and cafés offering relaxing outdoor seating. This piazza is where you'll begin your short 3 minute ride out to the island San Gullio.

There is much more weekend activity on Saturday and Sunday, but definitely worth the one hour taxi ride from Stresa.
