Neighbourhood: Navigli
The Navigli is part of historic Milan. In the ancient days, the entire city was linked with canals, similar to Venice. Today, most of the canals are gone, but the Navigli remains a canal-based neighborhood. There are two major canals: Naviglio Pavese and Naviglio Grande. The Naviglio Grande's bridges greet visitors at dusk with an amazing view. The Navigli district specializes in clubs, cafes, and vintage shops. Lifestyle reigns supreme here. You can start the walk from the Colonne di San Lorenzo, an antique colonnade in front of the Basilica di San Lorenzo. During the daytime, this place acts as a meeting point for artists and students reading books or chatting with friends; the nights turn it into a stepping-stone for club hoppers. Science lovers will also relish the opportunity to visit the Science and Technology National Museum Leonardo Da Vinci, showcasing inventions of the Italian genius.
How to get there

Always beautiful and unique is this alley where, on a small canal derived from the nearby Naviglio Grande, there is an ancient public wash house protected by a tiled roof. The various points where the washerwomen knelt are still clearly visible (the washermen, united in a brotherhood since the 18th century, went from house to house with panniers to collect the clothes to be washed, then entrusted them to the women, of whom they were practically the employers) to slam the clothes on the stone stalls.
Unfortunately it is now fenced off with red and white tapes due to the risk of falling tiles.
I hope it gets fixed soon!

The Vicolo dei Lavandai is a characteristic corner of Old Milan that can be seen by walking along the Naviglio Grande towpath, especially at times with less crowds. It is a covered public wash house, used from the nineteenth century until the middle of the last century, which has remained practically intact in its original structure. Also near the wash house, the lovely artists' courtyard is also worth a visit. Small but significant testimony to times gone by.

Used until the end of 1950 for washing clothes.
The moat is fed by the Naviglio Grande.
In the 19th century the men took care of the washing service, so is an unusual place dedicated to launderers and not to the laundresses

It's a jump back in the past. Only in this corner the original buildings of the Navigli is preserved. It is the place where the clothes were washed at the beginning of last century. Nowadays it is just a sort of remembering spot on the Navigli Area.

Okay, women used to wash their clothes here. (clap clap) There is a past. (clap clap) But besides snapping a photo at the washing stone, there is little that you can do. It is just a shelter. You should not spend more than 5 minutes there.

In the Navigli area. There are a few curious places, an house that you enter where you can find art works and bric a brac.

Nearby is an historic place where washerwomen used to the laundry on the stone slabs by the stream.

Words are not worth anyone's inner emotion. For any Milan-born person this is simply the place where you feel to walk thruough the alleys of Milan in the XIX century. Just need to read Alessandro Manzoni's "The Betrothed" before to go...

This is a characteristic corner on a small opening along Naviglio Grande. It used to be the washhouse.... The spot is nice for pictures, only if not too crowded.... Definitely worthy a quick stop. Some ateliers are in the alleys close by.
