Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

The masterly guide Igino Semprini led us on a historical and artistic journey to Palazzo Marino. His passionate illustration seemed like a "dance" that led us to twirl between quotes in Latin, history, art and culture of our city. Thank you Professor Igino!

I saw yesterday that the facade of Palazzo Marino (representative seat of the Municipality of Milan) facing Piazza della Scala is completely covered by scaffolding for the restoration work, sponsored by a well-known footwear brand.
For the occasion, the lower part of the roof was transformed into a comic story of the building itself, narrated by various characters linked to it, including the designer Galeazzo Alessi, Virginia de Leyva (i.e. the Nun of Monza), Cristina Trivulzio Belgiojoso , the architect Luca Beltrami, who oversaw its restoration at the end of the nineteenth century...
While waiting for the end of the works, which should take place before the 2026 Winter Olympics, I still deserve a visit.

Generally during the year I have several occasions - conferences, meetings, exhibitions - to visit the interiors of Palazzo Marino. On 16 May, for example, I followed the interesting initiative "The Stumbling Stones widespread monument", which took place in the beautiful Recommendation Room. This morning, however, I came to the moving commemorative meeting "Scarrage del Cibeno - 80 years after the Nazi-fascist massacre", held in the beautiful and scenic Sala Alessi. On many other occasions, as a simple citizen, I attended the meetings of the City Recommendation.
Needless to say, the interior of the palace, visited several times in the past, is really beautiful, both the halls and the courtyards. As for the exterior you can admire, in Piazza San Fedele, the original facade made by Galeazzo Alessi from 1553, while the one in Piazza della Scala, designed by Luca Beltrami and completed in 1892, is not currently visible as it is undergoing restoration work.

After a long period in which the beautiful façade of Palazzo Marino was hidden by scaffolding for restoration works, finally these are finished and the façade is, from yesterday, visible again in all its beauty.
The unusual thing is that this was not, originally, the main facade; in fact, the entrance to the palace was the one on Piazza San Fedele. The opposite side, what is now the main facade, did not open onto Piazza della Scala, which did not exist then, but was hidden by low houses and was nothing like the current one.
Luca Beltrami, creating the new square in front of the Scala, opened by demolishing the old houses, built this facade, inspired by the pre-existing one on Piazza San Fedele.
So a historical fake, but it's very beautiful!

This is an interesting building in the vicinity of the Duomo with a pretty historical look, however, it is not obvious what is it about, and whether it can be visited or it is a governmental building.

Every year before Christmas, the city mayor of Milan "offers" one special piece of art to be admired at this magnificent Palazzo Marino ... I have to say this is a great thing the city has ... see, they have amazingly well-trained tour guides who will explain you the painting / sculpture you're seeing ... only ONE per year ... but it is really worth it !!! and the building itself is so nice ... do go .. especially because it is FREE ... gratis !!!

This is a lovely palace, dating back to the mid 1550's, located opposite the Opera house.
Nowadays, the palace serves as Milan's town hall.
While the palace does look lovely on the outside, close examination show a lot wear and tear and the place seems to needs a little TLC.
