Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

There are only 150 meters between the squares of Sordello and Erbe, but the square of herbs (delle Erbe) appeared only by the end of the XII century with the expansion of the city. Before that, this area was used for cattle grazing, hence the name. At the same time, the rotunda of San Lorenzo was built already in 1083 under Matilda of Canossa. The dominant feature of the square is the Palace of Reason, built around 1250. Its clock tower is at odds in height with the spire of the bell tower of the Basilica of Sant'Andrea, which stands sideways to the square. This creation by Leon Battista Alberti was highly appreciated in the Middle Ages because of the alleged presence of the precious blood of Christ in it.

Hangout there with my friends to rest and get an icecream. Classic Italian square with nice buildings and landmarks.

Mantua is a fantastic place, so we protected and untouched it is like going back in time by 20 years. the cobbled roads, the incredible architecture, the history that surrounds Mantua makes for a fantastic trip. There are plenty of restaurants with a favourite being the Portici di Piazza delle Erbe - one of the best fillet steaks I've had (see photo). There is plenty to do here from walking the city, to viewing the 3 cathedrals and the castle. I'm sure you could get out on the river if you were that way inclined and on top of all of this there is plenty of shopping to be had including street markets.
A truly wonderful place that will not disappoint - highly recommended and I would revisit Mantua.

Tourists writing here will tell you that this is a great place to shop, eat, and take photographs. I live in Mantua, so my perspective is a bit more jaded. You'll inevitably walk here between the rotonda, clock tower, basiica etc. In my experience the cafes are all tourist traps with overpriced, underwhelming food. Once in a while I'll sit with locals on a nice day and have a drink. That's about it. The shops are also overpriced and not worth the effort -- in my opinion. I will say that it looks nice from above -- from the clock tower for example.

Just like an Italian piazza should be. Bustling, full of restaurants. The heart of the city of Mantua.

Charming market place surrounded by old buildings. Ground is a bit difficult to walk on - round stones, which can get a bit slippery when wet - even with flat shoes.

This square is a true jewel, surrounded by old and historical buildings and palaces. It’s fantastic to stroll under the arcades and eat something in one of the numerous bars.

This is perhaps even more the centre of Mantova than Piazza Sordello. There are a string of small eateries on both sides, including the lovely arcade at the back of the Basilica Sant' Andrea, plus the unusual church, Rotonda di San Lorenzo. A great place to sit in the sun, eat drink and be merry, and of course people watch. If you're a tourist in Mantova it will probably be the second place you'll head to after the Ducal Palace. Great spot.

Stop here for a drink or eats when in mantua - The buildings are beautiful and there’s a lovely feel to this ancient space.
The main buildings were being restored for the past number of years and the scaffolding has recently started to come down unveiling the structures beauty.
Super little city. Loved it.

We visited Mantua on market day and when the city was full of school trips, so this square was beyond busy and close to complete chaos. Its main features are the Torre Del’Orologio and the Rotunda, but it has many other historic buildings from the Renaissance period and later. A must see if you visit Mantua.
