About
This quaint harbor on the Italian Riviera makes for a lovely stop between Portofino and the Cinque Terre. Snap photos of the colorful boats that line the marina and take a seat outside a bar for a spot of people-watching. Explore the town center with its narrow streets and pastel-colored houses, and check out the delightful shops and restaurants for a taste of the local cuisine and culture. Overlooking the town is Castello Brown, a historic castle with panoramic views that are well worth walking up for. Skip the heavy traffic—Santa Margherita Ligure is best reached by ferry or train. – Tripadvisor

Its like stepping back a few years
A lovely seaside town that has plenty of good bars, cafes and restaurants. It has a nice old town as well as the sea front and a relaxed feel. After visiting Portofino by ferry we definitely felt we had made the right decision to base ourselves in SML.

A wonderful weekend with families in the amazingly beautiful Italian town of Santa Margherita.
This city captivated me with its beauty, friendly people and incredible landscapes. We spent three days in Santa Margherita with our family, we walked a lot, ate delicious food and even managed to sunbathe on one of the local beaches. We stayed in a beautiful large apartment with a private terrace on the roof of the house, which offered an incredible view of the sea, the cathedral and the neighboring colorful houses...)) This wonderful place left only warm and good memories and impressions! We will definitely be back again.

    Seaside summer resort
Beautiful, relaxing, wonderful food, laid-back resort town. The train stop is a short walk away from the waterfront making it an easy day trip. Or stay at one of the many resort hotels for a few days to relax. Summer is best.

Beautiful seaside town on the Italian riviera
We were based in Rapallo, but visited SML as we made our way on foot to Portofino. The walk to SML itself is very pretty, and the town is a real gem. Beautiful vibrantly colored buidlings, and a church overseeing the glorious bay.

This was ane of the closer coastal towns with hotels so you can visit the Cinque Terre area of the Italian Riviera. The history, culture, and scenery is very unique. Simple, inexpensive trains and ferries transport you to all the colorful, hillside communities with bright, colorful homes and a rich history. Many dining options and pleasant walks. Beaches are rocky and water is cool and clear. Very touristy but pleasant. Noisy vehicles and aggressive driving let’s you know you are still in Italy. We would love to visit again.

Santa Margherita Ligure is a lovely seaside town just next to Portofino with nice beaches, restaurants, shops and bars. The nice thing is it is relatively flat and you can walk most of the town without stairs unlike nearby towns. There are ferries that take you to Portofino, Camogli, San Fruttuoso and even Cingue Terra. The train station is in town and gets you anywhere along the coast easily.
Very busy in summer and still nice crowds even in late October and the weather was perfect. Apparently a bit warmer then typical in October this year (2022).

SML is an elegant seaside town primarily populated by Italians during the summer. There is a scenic harbour and plenty of excellent restaurants to choose from. Good for food and clothes shopping. Multiple boat trips available and regular bus to Portofino

This is a beautiful Italian town to visit and I want to highlight the walk (hike) to Portofino. We had never been to the area but had no trouble working our way from the train station west across town and heading out along the coast. There is a 5KM (more like 4 mile) walk along the coast to Portofino which is stunning. The first half is flat along the sea coast so can be easily walked. The second half into Portofino involves a lot of up and down hill climbing but the path is excellent. The views of the coastline and Portofino where worth the hike to us. You can hike the trail either direction and then take a taxi. After lunch in Portofino we decided to walk back. At a leisurely pace the walk will take 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

We took a nice new train over from Sestri Vevante - very easy to just walk into town. Santa Margherita is much more upscale and very pleasant to walk along the water. Lots of restaurants and upscale shops. Definitely worth spending an afternoon or many days at one of their beautiful hotels.

Santa Margherita Ligure is on the Italian Riviera overlooking the Gulf of Tigullio. We arrived by train from Sestri Levante. The train station is a gradual downhill walk to the town center. You can see the old town in a relatively short time. Up Via Palestro and down Via Cavour. In Piazza Caprera you can stop for a break and have a coffee at the many establishments here. Also you can visit the interesting baroque church dedicated to Our Lady of the Rose, which is in the same square.
Then you can go down to the magnificent promenade and walk along Via Pesccino to the left and Via Marconi to the right. This is a very pleasant walk along palm lined sidewalk which is wider than the street. Very good photo stops.
From SML you can go on boat tours and board ferries to Portofino and Rapallo.
Other sights include the Durazzo Park, fish market and Oratory of St Erasmo.

My wife and I stayed in the Grand Hotel Miramare for five days. We had a room with an ocean view and a balcony. The view was gorgeous.

We had a local guide to take us on a tour of Camoglie, San Fruttuoso, and Portofino. It took most of a day, and we enjoyed it. We took a train to Camoglie and got on a boat that took us on to the other stops. The views of the coast are fantastic.

Portofino itself is nice enough. There were plenty of good restaurants. It is pedestrian friendly. If you enjoy the ocean and browsing the shops, you will like it a lot.
