It's a climb to get here, but the view is worth it. The castle is not so shabby either, and with a lot of history (Churchill once was here... God knows how he got to the top).
The rooms are pretty bare, but several photos explain the history. But the view are incredible.

Definitely worth a visit!
Also the view from our hotel is breathtaking, still worth a visit to Castello Brown as from its top, there is a wider view.
Entry ticket EUR5 - well bit costy but it’s Portofino, so~ I enjoyed my visit there.

Once debarking from the bus or car whichever the mode of travel, once walked through the little streets to the Marina, it is easily sign posted.
Allow a good 10 to 15 minute walk (staged walk) up to the castle. The entrance fee at time of writing was 5 euro's payable upon entry. The attraction is breath taking and if you thought the marina and shops were something to look at, once you start the stair climb and view the lower plateau's every time it is a wow factor.
Had alot of interesting things inside as well as appreciating the castle and port views, the assortment of celeb's ranging from Humphrey Bogart, Laurel and Hardy, Marlon Brando, Louis Armstrong, Joan Collins, and Grace Kelly, Jane Mansfield to name a few who graced themselves in the 1950's

We arrived in Portofino in the morning. We walked down to the harbor and asked where to start the walk to Castello Brown. A man painting the outside of the Yacht Club (no yachts around!) indicated some steps to us. We started the climb up the hill. It took us a little while but we were in no hurry, just enjoying the day. When we reached the castle there was a 5 euro entrance charge. Once inside, I thought that the gardens were somewhat disappointing. However, the views from the castle and the terrace were stunning. It was a good place to just sit and enjoy the sea breezes, sun on your face and beautiful views. The castle and its history is somewhat interesting. Everyone seemed to be fascinated by the black and white pictures on the wall of the famous people that have visited Portofino. The castle itself is almost completely empty. When we left, we went down a path to the left that took us back to the harbor by a different pathway.

The best way to get the perfect view of Portofino is by climbing up to Castello Brown. There are two ways to go. You can go from the Marina but that is 185 stairs straight up. Another way is from the main square Piazza Martiri dell’ Olivetta. Look for Trattoria Tripoli, go past it and turn left onto Salita S. Giorgio. This gives you a more gradual climb to Castello Brown. It will be worth it!

After reading the recommendations, we wanted to walk up to Castello Brown with our 8, 5 and 2 year olds. We were slightly apprehensive but followed the route from the main village square and managed the walk in about 15 minutes. There was minimal moaning from the children even in +30° heat. We had a pleasant wander round the castle grounds at the top, enjoyed a rest on the benches and the views were just beautiful! We then walked back down the coastal path.

...But the view is unparalleled. We walked uphill to Castello Brown in the middle of a heat wave but once we got there, it was amazing. The views back to Portofino are stunning. And to be honest, that's the only reason we went there. It was worth the 5euro admission just to see the view.

We`d arrived in Potofino early and ahead of the crowds so we walked up the steep but manageable path to the castle before it was too busy. The views from the castle windows are amazing but with the help of the interpretation boards it`s even more amazing to imagine what it was like when the family lived there, entertained and had parties. WOW....what an interesting life they had. We had delicious Italian coffee in the rose gardens and sat quietly and enjoyed the view before the crowds arrived . Respect for the staff who keep this garden on a cliff edge so beautiful. Thank you.

The castle is located above the harbor and allows the most awesome views of the entire Portofino harbor. In the castle itself, there is not much to see, except for many black & white photos hung on the walls of the mostly empty rooms. Other than that, the real "star" of the castyle is the garden terrace that looks down onto the harbor. The views from this perch alone are worth the climb and the 5 euros to enter the castle. Don't miss going there for the views!

The walk up the stairs, or up the road is moderate but well worth it. You even pass some topographic 'cool' zones along the path. The castle is really a mansion, where they allow you to walk around freely. There is modern art on the interior room walls, and plaques with interesting history of the buidling and area. But the best thing were the gardens on all sides that present great views of Portofino in 1 direction and the coast in the other. And if you need to use a bathroom the ones in Castle Brown were gorgeous, private and modern.

The ticket is 5 euros. The castle is quite small and simple, but it is a must because of the views. I took the best pictures of Portofino there. It also has a nice collection of photographs of celebrities who visited the island in the past.

Is there any transportation to the castle for those with walking difficulties. If not can the walk be done slowly with a cane in less than a couple of hours easy walking?
Thanks

It took me about 30 minutes to climb. It's a solid hike. Not sure if there is any transportation available. The views are breathtaking.
