The Genoese played a massive part in the history of Istanbul where they built the famous Galata Tower. To celebrate getting one over on the Venetians, they built identical Palazzi in both Istanbul and Genoa. The Istanbul one has mainly disappeared, but the Palazzo San Giorgio has many Eastern touches - not least the fine tiles visible inside

This is beautiful building but unfortunately it has the awful concrete motorway bypass in front of it. You just have to try ignore it and admire St George slaying the dragon.

The port authority headquarters - a beautifully decorated Renaissance facade, with St George battling with the dragon, prominently over the front entrance. It was built originally in 1260 and there are parts of the older architecture at the back of the palace. It stands almost in the shadow of the elevated highway which passes over the old port of Genoa.... More

From a distance, the Palazzo di San Giorgio looks like any other white facaded building, but go up closer and you really appreciate the architecture and sheer beauty of the frescoes painted all over the exterior. Lovely building.

Now home to Genoa's Port Authority, this used to be a palace for one of Genoa's ruling families. Trompe L'Oeil is a visual illusion in art. You are trying to trick the eye into believing that what they are seeing is three dimensional. This building is known for that illusionary effect as well as the fresco of " Saint George... More

Adjacent to Porto Antico, it looks like another of many similar buildings in Genoa. But when you get up close, really close (5 metres) you realize that most of the carvings and relief features on the façade are actually painted frescos ! Amazingly well done. I've not seen anything similar anywhere, its worth a visit.

The Palazzo di San Giorgio or the Palace of St George was an interesting building to come across when in Genoa. Beautifully decorated outside it stands out from a long way off.
