Really nice street to walk down with historical building/palaces lining the street.
Of the via is many small laneways making the area full of little shops, cafe and bars.
Many of palaces are now museums and some are good to see.
Highly recommend going during day and night to see the contrast in atmosphere of area.

Our second time in Genoa and of course we walked through this lively street of the city again. It was born in 1550 with the name of Camino de los Reyes, in 1882 it received the current name of Via Giuseppe Garibaldi. Elegant buildings, art galleries, sumptuous palaces, public offices and some museums are what we see as we walk through it.

Genoa was a maritime city-state that competed with Venice and Pisa for supremacy, and the ancient streets built on the slopes exude a unique atmosphere, giving you a sense of the past. Garibaldi Street is home to a group of mansions that are registered as World Heritage Sites, and the Red and White Palace is particularly famous. The streets are narrow, so you won't be able to capture the entire building, including the palace, without a wide-angle lens, so I took this photo with the wide-angle lens on my iPhone. If you turn off the street into an alleyway, you'll find the seedy atmosphere unique to a port town, but I got the impression that it would be best not to get too close. It's about a 15-minute walk from Piazza Principe Station. I only stayed there for one night as a stopover on my way to and from work, so I would like to take my time sightseeing if I have the chance.

Very nice place to go for a walk and see the beautiful palazzi, browse some shops and eat great gelato! Several are open as museums of art or architecture and decor. Be sure to get your entry ticket at the bookstore next to the first palazzos. Inexpensive ticket gets you into three of them. This was a great, inexpensive and easy trip from our cruise ship. There were many more to see but we stopped after these three. We took a cab to the plaza at the end of the street and then came back to that plaza and found a taxi stand for the return trip to the ship.

A more unique than rare example, a street composed only of noble palaces, the result of the subdivision decided by the government of the Republic in the mid-16th century (to raise cash...). Of course the main reason was to show others one's power and wealth, but at least this left us with a series of notable buildings. Many buildings are still private property and can only be visited on special occasions; Despite its UNESCO protection, this spectacular road still remains little known outside Liguria

Built for forty years by the Grimaldi family to leave the medieval neighborhoods behind.
And therefore an infamous area of Genoa became noble.
Some of its palaces are framed within the rolli (World Heritage Site). declared in 2006.
Nice walk and enter several of them.

Beautiful pedestrian street lined with numerous palaces
14 majestic buildings in all, some to visit such as Palazzo Tursi, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso
Others occupied by banks or the municipality
Restaurants and cafes rub shoulders there

Shopping area that feels international..palazzo after palazzo that are now banks or government buildings. Not much open on Monday and things closed early. Gritty in spots and ends by port in not a great area. One Nuevo museum.. but wasn’t anything special as we thought we would be. Like any other old city shipping area not as clean

STRANI
(Via Giuseppe Garibaldi) - great Cicchetti bar and very popular with locals and tourists alike. Aperol spritz and house red went down well as did the tasty selection of vegetarian Cicchetti (cheese, walnuts and dash of balsamic vinegar was particularly good). We visited a couple of times during our recent visit.

There is a good reason why Via Garibaldi has been in the top 3 sites to see in Genova on TA for several years; it's absolute unique and beautiful. To update my three previous reviews of June 2012, 11/2011 and 8/2010 on Via Garibaldi, I can't emphasis enough that visitors to this street of UNESCO palaces, can't just walk down the street and expect to be amazed by the sites; this street takes some effort and lots of curiosity! The tourist office is on this street and they have two very good guide books on the "Rolli" palaces, one is free and a second costs one euro. Starting from Piazza Fontana Marose #1 on the left (#8 on the red diamond designating it as a UNESCO site), is the Palazzo Agostino Pallavicini-Cambiaso, the first to be built on the street and now is a business, look inside the courtyard to see beautiful columns with frescoed medallions and stucco ceilings. #4 Via Garibaldi (#11 UNESCO sign) is Palazzo Tobia Pallavincini-Carrega Cataldi the current seat of the Chamber of Commerce built in 1558, it is the most beautiful of palaces and has amazing ceilings on the ground floor. Walk in and ask the guard it you can see the upper floor; you will be dazzled! #5 (#12 UNESCO sign) is the headquarters of the Deutsche Bank-you can walk into the courtyard and just the ground floor of the bank to see the frescos by famous Genovese painters. #6 has a large, spacious courtyard that can be visited. #7 is Palazzo Nicolosio Lomellino-Podesta (#14 UNESCO sign) and is unique because of it's façade which is rich with stucco decorations and has a beautiful interior and courtyard-LOOK UP angels are looking down at you! Go all the way inside to see the beautiful nymphaeum. #10 houses a used book and record shop which seems always open-be sure to go in and look at the ceilings (the records are interesting too-what a flashback!) which are beautifully painted! Via Garbaldi #9 is Palazzo Nicolo Grimaldi-Doria duca di Tursi or just Palazzo Tursi by locals is the current "town hall or council" and also part of the museum complex (Museum Bianco with tapestries, furniture, pottery textiles etc...and Paganini's violin) on this street. This is a double in length of the other palaces and the only one with a front entrance which leads to another street directly in front to provide easy access for the former owners! If the third floor conference room is open go in-amazing! #12 on Via Garibaldi looks unimpressive, but walk upstairs and visit the interior design shop (Life Style Store) on the second floor; this is a great opportunity to see the palace decorations and frescoed ceilings. Street #18 is painted a deep red, thus it's called Palazzo Rosso- walk in; on the right they currently have a room with a display of models showing Via Garibaldi, on the left is a café serving lunch for 12 euros-but if you aren't hungry, just walk in and walk directly to the back into the open courtyard with architectural pieces. A great place for coffee. The museum has many famous paintings and should be visited and there is a terrace overlooking Via Garibaldi and the belvedere on the roof that is open to the public-a wonderful bird's eye view of the city! #11 is the entrance to Palazzo Bianco which is the most important city museum with Italian, Flemish and Genoese paintings including Caravaggio's Ecce Homo and a good museum shop with great souvenirs and guides. So when you start down the street-just don't walk it, explore it and you will have so much more enjoyment! It's best to visit Monday-Friday, during open hours, Saturday is OK also, but some of the businesses will be closed. Sunday, unfortunately isn't a good day to visit! The tourist office also has a audio guide of the city that lasts about 2 hours and they have reduced the cost to 7 euros, but be warned that their numbering system for just Via Garibaldi is not correct, so for just this street it takes a bit of work. Enjoy your time on this lovely street and be sure to return in the evening when it's all in lights.

Hello, we will spend two days in Genoa. How much time and what time of day shall we plan for Via Girabaldi? We are traveling with teenage daughters, any other destination that you recommend? Thank you.

Hi. A couple of hours for via Garibaldi. You can visit the Red Palace and the White Palace just at the end of the street. Than you can wander the historical center. Cheers
