We returned to Genoa after a few years, again on a stopover on our cruise. We tried to get to know some attractions that we missed on the first visit. The Spianata Castelleto was one of them. We walked to the free elevator. When we go up we find a terrace suspended over the historic center, with the best views of the city and the port. We saw colorful houses, important domes, small boats, also huge ones and a lively atmosphere.

The most beautiful view of the city, a large plateau from which one can see the port, the old town, the churches and the lighthouse of Genoa. There is no need to walk up, since there are two free public elevators, works of art nouveau. A must visit.

It is a viewing platform, easy to get to when following maps, some stairs but it was not that bad. Just have a bottle of water with you when you get to the top and you will be fine. You have a good view of the city which in my opinion isnt that beautiful but when you are in Genova I think it is a must to go to Spianeta especially because it is free.

Don’t make my mistake & put ‘Spianata Castelletto’ in Google maps to lead you to this lift - after several steep steps upwards it dawned on me I was heading for the top & not the base! So instead I used this elevator to come down. Not the ideal way round in baking heat. Whatever way you do it, the views up top are well worth the effort. It costs 90 cents for a one way ride, though no one checked. There’s a machine on site or tickets can be bought from supermarkets & tobacconists.

This viewing point has amazing views from all across genoa. You can really see how big an hilly it is especially the harbour. You take the lift to the top. The lift is a bit hard to find, but it is located next to a gym called hercules. Well worth it and i recommend walking down from it. You will most likely end up in via garibaldi.

We kind of found this place accidentally. There are two "lifts" which go here, but it is much more fun strolling through the narrow lanes/steps of Genoa "Old Town" to get up here. Around the back was a great cafe as well...Cheap, good, honest food and friendly staff

This is a nice observation deck that can be reached by either of two lifts. We went up in one and down in the other. Good views of the city from the top. Don't miss the nearby funicular when you are in the area. At present the lifts and the funicular are free!

Beautiful view of Genoa from the heights.
He climbs by elevator.
It is free and worth knowing the area.
You can walk from the center of Genoa, exit the elevator, tour the place, and from various angles, to enjoy charming views.
Very good place, to complete some visit to the wonderful City of Genoa and its surroundings.

Genova is a vertical city with splendid views throughout the city, so I don’t think of Spianata Castelletto as a tourist attraction although it is a beautiful view. For those not familiar with Genova, Castelletto is the name of the neighborhood where this view is located. The actual panoramic view is called Belvedere Luigi Montaldo.

Most tourists will visit the pedestrian street, Via Garibaldi, so while there it’s easy to visit Spianata Castelletto and see Via Garibaldi and beyond from above. At the beginning of Via Garibaldi at Piazza Fontane Marose, cross the busy traffic street (Galleria Garibaldi) to Piazza del Portello and enter the long corridor to the elevator. You need a ticket, either a bus or elevator ticket and use the yellow machine to stamp it. Periodically the police have asked me to produce a ticket when using the elevator, but they are pretty soft on non Italian speaking tourists, but I don’t recommend it. The bus ticket is good for 110 minutes from when it’s stamped. Exit the top of the elevator and you are at Spianata Castelletto or Belvedere. If you would prefer to climb steps, exit Via Garibaldi (the opposite end) by Palazzo Bianco and on your right are the steps leading up to Spianata Castelletto. If you really want a good view, try continuing down Via Cairoli, from Piazza della Meridiana to Largo Zecca and take the Funicolare Zecca/Righi to the top to the small village of Righi…now that’s a view, all for the price of a bus ticket!

There are two ways to reach this wonderful belvedere point. The easiest way is to take the elevator(you need a ticket for this, the same ticket used on buses) from Piazza del Portello. The other way is to walk on some pretty steep narrow streets-Salita di San Francesco(starting from Piazza della Meridiana),then Salita alla Spianata di Castelletto.
From there-beautiful view of the harbour and of the old town.Don't miss it!
