- NJCricketer503 contributionsNord Est Sunset Boat Tour - very enjoyableCaesar did an outstanding job on this sunset tour. There were only 8-10 people on this boat - it was perhaps the best part of our visit to Cinque Terra. The Nord Est company was kind enough to allow us to move our reservation to the following day after we were unexpectedly arriving late in Vernazza. The preseco and bread with olive oil and salami was fine too. We saw all 5 cinque terre locations from outside, the nice sunset and the evening lights ar Vernazza. Could jump into the water for a few minutes as well. Highly recommend the boat tour.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 September 2023

Now I was one of those tourists who did the flying visit on a tour, we were literally there for an hour. There are several overpriced cafes / restaurants to chose from and souvenirs shops selling the same stuff. It’s beautiful, glad I saw the village but I would not return.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 September 2023

Monterosso al Mare is mainly a beach, with many deck chairs for rent and gravel sand. Vernazza has more shops, cafes, restaurants and open spaces. Corneglia is very small. Manarola has winding streets and restaurants, with a rocky shore. We had no time for Riomaggiore.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 August 2024
- Jacklyn Cobey-MackFort Lauderdale, Florida174 contributionsBreathtaking !!!This morning, in our village Monterosso, the day started with heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. However, we had the opportunity to visit two other nearby villages, Vernazza and Cornelius... It was somewhat exhausting since Cornelius has 380 steps to climb to reach the top of the cliff, but might I add, it's well worth a visit.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 August 2024

What a disappointment. It started on a nice, sunny, but not too warm September day. We decided to visit the famous Cinque Terre region and selected three of the five villages. Based on recommendations on the internet and from friends, we took the train from La Spezia. There it appeared that all parking places and garages were full, and by sheer luck we found a deserted spot in a nearby street where we could park te car. Two ticket machines at the train station with a crazy user interface, even requiring our email addresses and our mobile phone numbers. In the end we were quite sure we had bought the wrong tickets, but decided to jump on the fully overcrowded train anyway. Mind you, it was late September, not July or August. The villages itself are completely overrun by tourists from all over the world. There is little to none left of the original Italian flair, it is the high priest of commerce who rules here. And let's be honest: it is not even that beautiful...

This is probably the most interesting and beautiful of all the villages. However, I was disappointed with the overall region. In between crowded streets, cafes/restaurants that close very early and houses that are in need of a refurb, this location was not up to expectations. Vernazza is probably the best looking village and had a bit less crowds when I visited mid-afternoon in August.
Around the area you can visit Maranola (worth a quick visit), Riomaggiore (although here the houses are in bad shape and there's little to see other than the small harbour) and Monterrosso al Mare which has an average beach, specially when compared to other beaches in the south of Spain and / or France.
Things to know: if you're visiting by train, expect to pay €10 per trip / per person, regardless of the destination. You're better off paying the cinque terre card which gives you unlimited trips on the train, plus access to the "famous" trails around the area, with the exception of the newly opened Via del Amore which you have to pay €10 extra per person (don't do it, it is a rip off, we walked this new "trail", it was supposed to take about 30 minutes, we did it in about 5-10 minutes, it's how short it is... you're better off doing some of the other trails, the views are better).

Each of the towns along Cinque Terre have a different feel about them. This feels like a fishing town that has been taken over. The train gets you right into the middle of town (no long hike) and you make your way through the restaurant and souvenir shops to then end where there is a beach of sorts (brown mud rather than sand) and some nice photo opportunities.
Probably my least favourite town in Cinque Terre that seems not to cope as well with the tourist traffic.

All the reviews about La Marina Rooms and Christian are true fantastic we got the single with a private balcony overlooking the ocean. The room was beautiful. The bathroom was newly renovated by Christian and was wonderful the service. Every day with the maid was wonderful. It was all we could ask for and more because Christian got us a wonderful boat tour for six and a wonderful dinner with Andrea overlooking the harbor. The food was fantastic. Andrea is the owner at Bill Forte and his show of bringing the food and romancing the food and making it fun was over the top we loved it. We will come back and stay at La Marina Rooms and let Christian take good care of us again.

We walked here from Monterosso which was hard but worth it. Beautiful views along the way and spectacular as you drop down into the town. Some great photo stops. We went late May and it was hard to get lunch due to the number of tourists. A picnic may be appropriate.

It was our first trip to Italy and what a great time we had. Arriving 3 days before Christmas, Vernazza was beautiful. We stayed at Christina's Airbnb 4 nights and had a great time. We visited the 5 towns of Cinque Terre, jumping on and off the local train. Then we traveled back to Rome. The weather was great and we walked and walked all around the area.

Well let me start by saying I had high hopes for the Cinque Terre and for the most part they were all me. We hiked Vernazza to Monterosso and and visited, ate and shopped in all the towns. There is stunning beauty and quaintness but the town least meriting of time is by far Vernazza. THe shop works were the least friendly, the most demanding, the rudest and inhospitable. Yes, Vernazza merits a visit if for nothing else than to walk up to Monterosso, but skip the rest. The restaurants and not the best, the shops wares are redundant and highly over priced.

On my visit to Cinque Terre on a cruise excursion this was one of the 3 villages we visited. This is a picturesque location. Every where you turn its quaint, scenic, and all your photos will be picture postcard perfect.
We stopped here for lunch and this gave us a moment to slow down and just soak up the ambience of the place.
This village is one of those not to be missed location

Hello,
Thank you for your comments on trip advisor. You had mentioned you visited several times. Could you recommend your favorite accommodations?
Thank you,

Hi Samuel, we stayed at La Polena in Vernazza. You can google search the name and call them to make a reservation, I didn’t find them on other accommodation sites. The owners are Frederico and Virginia, and they are great people! I hope this helps!

Hi there,
We will be visiting our son who is studying for the semester in Milan...we have about 4 days and are trying to figure out if the Cinque Terre area is a good choice around April 17-21...We've been to the Amalfi Coast in the summer and loved it. Will it be warm enough to swim? Will the boats be riding tourists from town to town yet? Are all the restaurants open then? Should we wait until we are back in the summer to enjoy the area? We know it will be crowded, but that's not an issue for us.
Thanks for your advice!

To be honest I personally would not travel 12 hrs round trip if you are only in Milan 4 days. If you have never been to Monza, Bergamo, Brescia or Verona those are awesome places to see. If you want water take a look at Lake Iseo. Stunning lake and surrounding area. Don’t get me wrong Cinque terre is stunning and you don’t want to rush through it. Happy to provide tips on the places mentioned above if interested.

April is a good time of year to visit, the weather could be a bit mixed, most facilities will be open as the area is an all year round destination. We visited last September after the school holidays and it was still rammed. The sea was warm because the sea had the summer to warm it up.Not sure how warm it will be in April though. But its the med and I would guess it will be fine to go there in April.

Buongiorno,

Ciao, vorrei andare a Vernazza, mi interesserebbe sapere:

Hello - is the Cinque Terre oaky to visit in October? Are restaurants etc open. We are planning on staying 3 nights in vernazza. Any thoughts appreciated.
Travelling with my husband and 14 year old daughters.
Written 18 February 2018
Hi Kate - we were there in October 2017 and everything was opened. We stayed in La Spezia and were using the train to travel between villages. Vernazza was quite busy compared to the other villages. Corniglia, in my opinion, is the most charming village - many steps to get to the village (from the train station - but well worth the view. Monterosso has a beach and it was warm enough to sit by the water for a little picnic and dip our feet in the water. You will enjoy!
