A minor sight in Riomaggiore which is eclipsed by the colourful marina. Most tourists don’t get as far as the castle and if you have a very tight itinerary, then you can give it a miss.
Only the remnants of the original castle remain. It dates back to the 13th century, and was built in 1260 and, later, rebuilt by the Genoese in the 15th/16th centuries.
What you see here are sections of the surrounding walls and two large, stubby circular towers.
There are similar ruins of a 13th century castle in Vernazza but this one is much better. It’s much more substantial, is well maintained and you can go inside the tower here. The Oratorio di San Rocco, a small chapel, is also here.
The castle’s commanding position, means that it has a panoramic view of the Ligurian coastline.
Overall, if you are hiking any of the popular Cinque Terre trails, then you will constantly be coming across stunning lookout points so if you’re short of time, you could easily skip the castle.
On the other hand, if you are not hiking, then the castle is a good chance to experience those breathtaking viewpoints that are so much a part of the Cinque Terre.

A lot of beauty like the other 5 lands, or rather 4, of Italian Liguria. It is the first of the 5 from the La Spezia side. It is advisable to rent even one night in the area and not go from Florence for example. It is too beautiful not to take advantage of spending at least one night in the area. It is quite expensive because it is fashionable but it is really worth every penny invested.

The castle itself is not much, quite small wit room and a bell tower. But the connected small park offers the most beautiful view of the city and the coastline towards the other four cities.

The castle of Riomaggiore dates back to the XIII century. It dominates the village from the hill just above the church of St. Giovanni Battista. There is no admission charge and not a lot to see except some beautiful towers and walls. An interior room has been nicely renovated as a meeting room (private access only). It's a nice walk up from either the train station or from the top of Via Colombo and offers some lovely views over Riomaggiore and to the cliffs on either side.

We opted to pay the fee to visit this castle, while it was being set up for a wedding. An open plaza, a small chapel and a small museum make up the venue. No worth the entrance fee.

The views are great but don't go thinking you're going to tour some Welsh castle with stories of dragons. It's a small fortress with a nice view of the sea. Worth the walk for the view but the castle itself would not be worth it.

The hike to the top was steep, and at 34 degrees not pleasant, but when we got here, the view from this place is amazing.
Inside the castello is a small exhibition (mostly text with a few old tools) that describe the history and the craft of winemaking at Cinqueterre.

There are many ways to get a good view of the historical village of Riomaggiore. Climbing up to the area around the castle is one way but there are other viewpoints that are just as good such as along Via Signorini. The castle itself is just a big hulk of a building. You can't even get inside once you get up there. The view is great in spite of the castle.

Lot so of up getting to the tower. Plodded along (had back surgery 15 months ago) but well worth the view overlooking the city.
Looked for pirates but saw none...which begs the question "What type of sweaters do pirates wear?"

This is a small castle on top of the hill above the city. Not much to see inside and we were not allowed to go up on top door was locked. It is a nice short hike with a lot of stairs to climb but worth it for the view.
