- Scottish-Hidden-Gems🏴💎Ayrshire, United Kingdom9,223 contributionsCinque terreWe visted cinque terre on a shore excursion which was a long drive from our cruise ship but it was definitely worth it. We feel in love with it as soon as we stepped off the train. It is so beautiful and can only imagine what it's like here when the weather is nice. We visited during November, so it was very quiet but plenty of shops and restaurants were still open. We would love to return to explore the area more, its definitely one of our favourite parts of Italy.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 December 2023

We also visited a stunning little restaurant called Trattoria La Grotta and I had the best fish ever. I filmed my full experience with some tips along the way on my YouTube channel vickisworldtravel if anyone is interested.Visited August 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 27 September 2024

We had a boat trip, so we could visit all villages (except Corniglia, which is high on a mountain) in one day and watch the beautiful landscape from the sea. You also can do hiking tours through the beautiful landscape. For some of the trails you have to pay.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2024

One star only for the landscapes and the beautiful sea, the average rating would be lower.
Otherwise it's just a terrible tourist trap.
I had fond memories of when I was a child, the last time I was here, but apparently everything has changed.
At the ticket offices they do not give detailed information on legalized transport-related scams (€10 for a 5-minute train ride between one village and another or €30 for a day ticket, more than €40 for a ferry if you want to go there and back, €7, 50 if you dare to move on foot on the CAI paths, as a trekking enthusiast I have never heard that they can be paid for, especially with arrogant and sarcastic operators) and a poor naive person finds himself trapped in deciding which is the lesser evil for go back home.
The whole thing looks like a big movie set suitable for quick-and-run tourism where people on grand tours don't bother to understand what they are looking at or visiting.
Among other things, already too crowded in April.
If you like the Cinque Terre I recommend a visit to San Terenzo, Lerici and Portovenere, reachable by public transport without loan sharking but equally evocative.
Never again.

You can travel from each town (starting in La Spezia) by train and get on and off or take the trails connecting them. All beautiful colorful cliffside towns, each with a waterfront, spectacular views, and great little cafes and restaurants. A great way to spend a day or two exploring the north Italian western coast.

Understandably one of the most popular parks in the world, with its atmospheres given both by nature and by the works of man. We would recommend visiting all the locations by car: the car park is available (we went on a sunny spring weekend with high attendance and had no problems) and you avoid the crowds, costs and forced train schedules which we don't have found it convenient (€32 each for just one day!). Furthermore, traveling by car allowed us to travel along internal roads where there was no one and where we could appreciate breathtaking views!

Parco Nazionale Cinque Terre is a Natural Park located in La Spezia, between Pisa and Genoa. It is a wonderful coastal park, where there are 5 charming towns (I think thatt for this reason the name is Cinque Terre, Five Lands in English), which are Riomaggiore, Corniglia, Manarola, Vernazza and Momterosso. Really, each town is a great place to walk, enjoy with streets, buildings, the sea, etc. It seens you are inside a tale, go to beach, eat in some restaurants, etc. Really! Really! Wonderful!
If you want to move between towns, you can do two things: or catch the train with the pass of the national park or, of you like sport, you can walk around all of them (in fact, when we visited this place, in August-2019, some coastal paths are closed on works). A place to come with elders, children, family or couples.

Definitely a destination to visit once in a lifetime, unique landscapes, shame the management and very high prices. Family option train ticket (two adults and one child 11 years) from Sanzana to visit the 5 Terre for 102€. On the way back he left us in La Spezia but we had not been told . Parking impossible to find in the sea areas, I highly recommend moving by bus or train. For the culinary aspect nothing to say! Excellent anchovies of the place!! And lemon cakes. I don't know if I would go back.....

There is no discussion about beauty, about the price of train tickets it is a LEGALIZED ROBBERY!!! After the region-Trenitalia agreement, prices have undergone a monstrous increase! To try to limit the tourist flow, it was decided to increase the cost of the ticket in a senseless manner. While on the one hand residents would have benefited with discounts on the various routes, those who are linked to commercial activities and related activities are not at all happy. It's the usual question of seeing the glass half full or half empty.
Speaking to commuters, they themselves say that all of this is scandalous.
On holidays the tourist pays around thirty euros for the La Spezia-Levanto route with all the stops
. Residents 7.50 euros....
We are still Italian but the tourists are second class, or rather even worse!!!
Tip: buy tickets online. You pay a small commission but avoid long queues at the manual or automatic ticket office.
A note on the latter. The ticket is necessarily nominative and therefore non-transferable. The problem is that it takes forever to get one, increasing the queues at the machines even more.
There are various languages to help foreigners but I saw many of them staying there for more than 15 minutes and then not solving anything.
Maybe it's better like on the metro. enter the route, pay and you have the ticket.
Trenitalia and Liguria region: very very bad!

My wife and I explored the Parco for several days, using Riomaggiore as a base. We did just about as much walking among the 5 villages that comprise the Cinque Terre as allowed. Parts of the hiking trails connecting the villages are closed. Who knows til when. We bussed from RioMaggiore to Manarola and walked to Corniglia. It is up the hillside with fantastic view of the coastline. We took the train from Riomaggiore and walked up the hill from the train stop and then on to Vernazza, which is another beautiful village. We took a train to Monterosso, hoping to sail back to RioM, but the weather did not permit, so we took the train back to Rio. It was all fun, and spectacular secnery.

Beautiful place, lots of aesthetic pleasure for eyes and soul. It’s really hard to park the car even if the cost of parking goes for around 20 euro per day. Place highly recommended for visitors, we are going to come back here in September.

So already in August we left our Airbnb at 7 a.m. for Genoa, the train that we were supposed to take there at 9:23 a.m. was 1 hour late!!
I don't understand that the only direct train to go from Genoa to Levanto is only at 7 a.m.
So we arrived at 12:30 p.m. in Monterosso (first village).😡
We did the first walk between Monterosso and Vernazza of 1h30 where there was no one...
We didn't try to find a place in the shade to eat, in the end we ended up standing against a low wall, it was impossible to find a bench in the shade because there were too many people. 😕
Then we wanted to swim except that there were too many people on the beach so we went to a small cove behind the village, we didn't know it but... it was the boat loading area! !
I don't understand all this enthusiasm around the Cinque Terre, yes it's beautiful but there's nothing crazy, you might as well go see the Boccadasse district in Genoa (if you're going to visit Genoa), there are always people there but not as many and it's cheaper...
The trains between the villages were late, crowded with people, it looked like the Parisian metro... (yes I think it's better out of season).
And getting back to Genoa was still a hassle. There were still so many people and all the trains were late.
In total we paid 120€ for a family of 4!!!!

Sooo crowded even in the first week May- these villages are now damned by their own beauty. We stayed a week in moneglie which is 10 km to the north. Thank goodness. We hiked the area as well as used the trains and ferries between the towns. The 5 villages are absolutely ruined by mass tourism after 10 am in the morning. Every ferry and train disgorges hundreds of passengers. The villages themselves are now wholly given over to this. Cruise boats moored down near La Spezia and Livorno send huge parties of thousands into tiny villages which have lost all authenticity and charm. The views of them are wonderfu (from the cliffs and paths as well as boats). Once you get off the transport you get the true picture. Between 10 and 4 pm it's like being in a can of sardines. For a little more room take the ferry to Portovenere which runs from Manarola and Riomaggiore. A lovely trip. We would recommend staying in moneglie or levanto or monterossa the northernmost of the villages which is more spread out. Visit each one of the villages as early as you can get up in the morning. Then take one of the many, many hiking trails (not the sentiero azzura which is mega crowded). There are lovely walks all along the coast behind moneglie, riva trigosa, framura etc. The ligurian cuisine is amazing too. The true charm of the area is outside the villages in the hinterland and in Genoa.

La Spezia Port: My Family of 4 plans to head to Monterroso and Vernazza at this port. I am thinking of taking a ferry to Monterroso, a train to Vernazza and then a train back to La Spezia. Another option would be the reverse, train up and ferry back. Thoughts?

I agree with the previous reply--it depends on how much time you plan to spend in the 5Terre area. It is great to connect to the towns on foot and by train. By hiking, you'll get many different views of the sea and steep hillsides. Please expect that the hikes between towns involve hills and stone steps with lots of up and down, depending on the direction you take. A fairly easy hike is to take the bus from Manarola uphill to Volastra, then begin hiking downhill towards Corniglia (1 1/2 hrs hike), the only town that doesn't touch the sea. Trains are frequent between towns and easy to use We took the boat from Manarola to Portovenere, which you can also catch in Riomaggiore to cut off some of the travel time (approx 45 mins on the water). Portovenere was lovely, with a pretty piazza and cafes in the center of town and an easy walk to the church and fortress on the point.
IMHO, you can't go wrong, however you decide to spend your time in this spectacular place!

In quel caso credo serva là cinque terre card perché dovrebbero controllare all’inizio dei sentieri.

Hello, I want to sightsee Cinque Terre in September. Is it possible to go from La Spezia to Portovenere and then the Cinque Terres by boat? In that case, what time do the boat rides start in the morning?. Then, I'd like to come back from the furthest village to -Corniglia and then to La Spezia by train. It would be useful to have the timetables of the trains and the boats. Where could I find them on the Internet? Thanks a lot!

I personally was very disappointed from Pisa. The "crooked tower", okay, that's a must, but the rest was not as phaszinating as I hoped and imagined. Lucca on the other hand is really amazing. That is like being going back in time a couple of hundred years. If I had to choose, Lucca would always be my 1st choice over Pisa.
Another tipp: buy a local tourist map (it's just some Euros), for example at the book store of the train station in Lucca. It will show you all the interesting places and you can plan your walk through the city in the best and most efficient way and won't miss any highlight.
Have fun and enjoy the area, Liguria and that area of Italy is just as beautiful as you might imagine in your dreams!
