Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I loved the stones of the facade as well as the interior of this church, which dates from 1307, in black and white. Entrance to this church is free and you can see different candlesticks there. The rosette is truly magnificent and well-loved

This is a very nice church in the heart of the village. It is the only church I have ever seen with black and white stripes. It is worth stopping to go inside of.

Nice little black and white church. We stopped in on our walk around Monterosso al Mare. I really liked the cool black and white style architecture. The altar was also very pretty.

We stayed in Monterosso a month and attended services at San Giovanni Battista each Sunday. It was really nice to join the locals in worship, and there were also special events at the church throughout the week, including a concert. The church has survived various floods, and you can see photos inside of the devastation created by those events. The water levels are even marked on the outside of the building. I like the way the church is centrally located, as though everything else is somehow radiates out from the church. Even the pirate re-enactment we watched on the beach centered on the church as a sanctuary for the people.

We arrived in Monterosso Sunday afternoon and asked at our hotel where we might find a Catholic Mass. We were told that there was a 6:00 pm Mass every Sunday. It was wonderful and in Italian. The priest gave everyone communion on the tongue and it was given in both species the Precious Body and Blood!!!! Absolutely perfect way to begin our vacation in Cinque Terre!

The beautiful small church in the Borgo Antico of Monterosso al Mare is deceiving in its simple appearance from the outside. In the interior it is more ornate. The rose stained glass window above the entrance lets in some gorgeous diffused light. My wife and I visited during the off season this past November and were the only ones in the church building.

This church dominates the lower part of Monterosso, with its striped motif, and solid construction. The clock seems to be on time, so I guess its well maintained. The interior is worth a short visit, it is neither austere or ornate, but it speaks for the village. For a fishing village, I'm sure that he tower of this building has been a landmark and relief for many returning sailors, and a place to respect and honour those lost at sea.

The facade of green and white marble stripes is particularly interesting and at the top the rose window. Worth a look inside too where there are also stripes on the arches and pillars.
Directly next door is the Oratory of the Confraternita dei Neri which has a somewhat similar striped facade. But though the Church is built in the Gothic style the Oratory is built in the Baroque style. Both are worth a look if nearby.

Give it a look. It is lovely, and cool! I was amazed that it was as ornate, given its small town location.

In a sea of pastel medieval buildings in the old village of Monterosso sits the distinctive church. Outside you will notice the black and white striped exterior of white marble and black serpentine. There is a round carved stone window that is among the most beatufil on any church anywhere. If you have the chance to attend mass with the townspeople or one of the many concerts or cultural events held in the church you will get a sense of how it is truly community center. On any trip to Monterosso this is a gem not to be missed.
