Beautiful architecture in downtown, I was surprised of this pretty city, very close to the Cruise ship terminal, we enjoyed walking around the town, full of restaurants, Coffee shops, sourvenirs and more.

We spent two days here while waiting for our Med cruise to start. The old town is located adjacent to the harbor and our hotel (the Savoia) was very convenient as it allowed us to easily walk through this neighborhood of wonderful piazzas, operatic theater, enticing restaurants and lovely shops and boutiques. Several key spots include the can't miss
Piazza Unita, Grand Canal and the Roman ruins all within easy walking distance.

Nice little city with grand looking buildings. It is close to the main cruise port, so we walked through the neighborhood to see it before our NCL cruise.

Cabs are a little confusing here, someone told us you have to dial a number for a cab in order to get one, but we waited at the taxi stand and one picked us up and took us to the pier which was not far from the center of town.

On the way from Venice to Rovinj we passed Trieste and decided to make a short detour to the city. The city has a beautifully renovated core and a few nice places to linger around the Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia and the canal.

Our cruise was supposed to stop in Venice, but the port changed to Trieste. At first, we were a tad disappointed but as we approached Trieste we were amazed at the beauty of the area. We decided to take the Hop On Hop Off Bus to become acquainted with the area and it gave us an idea which stops we wanted to return to and spend more time. There are several sites, restaurants, and shops around the cruise port along with a beautiful hotel located directly across the street.

The old city is wonderful to walk around. Amazing to see the Roman ruins pretty well preserved amongst the living city.

Here you find nice little alleys, shops and some antiquities such as a Roman amphitheater. It is also a good place for an aperitif.

Trieste isn't the cheapest city but there are good restaurants and gelato and the shopping opportunities are what you expect in Italy. As it was not long ago the fourth largest city in the Austrian empire, the architecture is not exactly Italian, but great! The pedestrian streets of the old town are great with kids.

We came to Trieste on a day trip from Venice and wished we had made plans to stay longer, because there was not enough time to see everything that we wanted in the Old Town. The interesting architecture, beautiful squares, Roman ruins, lovely churches, statues, coffee houses, inviting restaurants and more combined to make our brief stay truly worthwhile. We especially liked the massive main square with its palaces and seaside location and the relatively small 1st-century A.D. Roman gate.

It took about 15 minutes to walk from the train station to the main square. A side street there held a Tourist Information office, where we picked up an audio tour of the city. This proved to be extremely helpful, because no information existed at most of the sites we visited. Though the office also provided us with a map, we found it a bit difficult to follow and sometimes got lost.

Many of the Old Town streets are pedestrian. They are both flat and hilly, depending on destination. For example, we headed up San Giusto Hill toward the cathedral and encountered narrow, steep, twisting thoroughfares, made exceeding slippery because of the heavy December rain that fell that day.

I strongly recommend good walking shoes for explorations here at any time of year. In winter, we also needed coats that blocked a howling, cold wind that seemed intent on sending us into the sea.

I really liked Trieste and most of all, the architecture. Streets are very wide and clean and you feel more like in a nordic country than in a typical italian city.
