The Grand Canal was built between 1754 and 1756 and was a key component in the urban plan that lead to the establishment of the Borgo Teresiano.
The canal is now only about 400 metres long although it used to reach as far as the Church of Sant'Antonio. It was built to enable boats to directly access the city centre to unload their goods. There were a number of boats moored in its waters.
The canal today is surrounded by a number of stylish 19th century buildings and is crossed by two road bridges and one pedestrian only bridge. There are also a number of cafes and restaurants around its sides.
The water appeared to be very clean and was very calm enabling me to capture some good reflections.

A small canal quite close to the seafront. It was interesting to watch the large jellyfish in the water. The sides of the canal are lined with some good places to eat along with ice cream shops. It was fairly busy during the evening's we were there with families, couples, dog walkers and some younger people. There is a good atmosphere and it's a good place to pass the time. At the top of the canal is a big church.

Located in the heart of the historic old town, not far from Piazza Unita, the Canale Grande is a small waterway that has existed since 1700 to allow direct access to the center city by ships and unload their cargo. The canal extends from Riva Tre Novembre to Via S. Spiridione and ends at Piazza Sant'Antonio Nuovo and Chiesa di Sant'Antonio Taumaturgo. A nice area for a pleasant stroll and enjoying the surrounding cafe bars and restaurants. The canal was one of the nerve centers of Trieste's commercial hub. Its banks are still lined with the squares, churches and historic cafés built by the merchants who made the city great. Some of them are, Palazzo Gopcevich, now the home of the Schmidl Museum Theater and the Photo Library of the Civic Museums, Palazzo Carciotti, Piazza Ponterosso, Piazza Sant'Antonio, built on the in-filled canal section in 1934, the Serbian Orthodox Church of San Spiridon, the Church of St. Anthony of Taumaturgo, and the historic Stella Polare café. In this area, the Fairs and Exhibitions are often held. Atmosphere is always pleasant.

We found Trieste's Grand Canal to be far from big. It is fairly narrow and only about 650 feet long, but it makes a large contribution to an extremely pretty area of the city. Small motor boats are moored by both banks; and bars, cafes and squares flank the clear water. We enjoyed wonderful views of the canal from the Ponte Rosso, a short span that has been around in one form or another since 1756.
This small bridge holds a bronze statue of writer James Joyce on its North side. Life-size, the work accurately captures his likeness, based on the photos I have seen. He lived on and off in Trieste for 11 years and wrote chapters of his famous "Ulysses" here. Ponte Rosso also offers lovely photo ops of the canal and its immediate area, including Chiesa di Sant'Antonio on the canal's Western end.
The Grand Canal -- the city's only canal -- came into existence as part of a project to enlarge channels to the sea, thus allowing ships easy access to various warehouses for loading and unloading. No other canals were completed, and this one can no longer accommodate ships.
Easy to find, the canal runs East/West in the city center near the main square.

the canal is a very good idea, as it stretches from the sea into the center of the city, with restaurants and markets on both sides of it

went there with a few classmates and spent around a week in Venice.
the small alleyways, the canals and the friendly atmosphere makes this city a must see one.
though the night life dies not make it to the level of other European cities, the small bars are quite nice and very homey like.

Arriving by train we made an initial stop here for coffee on a sunny day. There are a number of cafe's that line each side of this rather "tongue is cheek" named waterway making it a very relaxed and picturesque spot. The two stone bridges that cross the Canal have been complimented by a pedestrian bridge since our last visit and standing at the sea end of the Canal there are great photographic opportunities looking towards the Sant' Antonio Church at the far end. One unusual feature is the excellent, larger than life statue of James Joyce (A past resident) shown beginning to cross one of the bridges. A great place to relax.
