This place shows you what the Yugoslavian Army did during and especially after the II World War. It is a grim place. Hundreds or bodies of mostly innocent people were thrown by Tito's partisan . A black hole in the history of the Italian-Yugoslav relations for decades . Need taxi or your own car.

Foiba di Basovizza is a place where memory of hate and nationalist sentiments became drama. At the crossroad of different people and ideologies.

The story behind this controversial monument that remembers war crimes against Italians during and after WWII is fascinating if you like to learn about European history. We visited on our last day and took bus 39 up the green mountains and it was a bit of a mystery exploration in a beautiful nature area. The actual site is not well-promoted... More

A reminder of the extent of history surrounding the area, the excesses of war. A place to visit to ensure similar things never happen again.

Just outside the small village of Basovizza (pay attention to the signals) you'll see a cross-shaped sculpture in a large meadow with cobbles. A big stone cover clad with rusted iron signs the top of the deeper 'foiba'. All the layout is particularly striking and gloomy, but not unsettling, and it instils a sense of peacefulness.
