My favorite

This was my favorite of the Ravenna mosaics. Small chapel with mosaics almost covering. Incredible detail, particularly of Jesus baptism.

Will review the Ravenna Mosaics generally as is difficult to just pick one as a favorite, they are all so amazing, and historically significant. It is definitely worth the time spending a few days in Ravenna seeing the various mosaics and walking the historical district of the town.

The mosaics are superb, and it is clear from the layout how the baptisms worked - there is a marble-lined area for the (empty) baptism pool. There are seats around the walls (wonderful for tired tourists). It is hard to see now that there was such a huge struggle between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic strands of Christianity, but this... This amazing little baptistery is a hidden gem. This is included in a mixed ticket that purchase for the 5 attractions. Do't miss it.

The Baptistery of Neon is an Orthodox baptistery built in the 5th century. Decorated with beautiful mosaics it's the oldest of the Ravenna UNESCO sites. The centerpiece is the ceiling mosaic depicting a scene of baptism of Jesus surrounded by figures of the twelve apostles. Ample sunlight allows for good pictures to be taken. The combination ticket costs €9.50 and... More

If you are in Ravenna even for a short time you cannot miss it. Mosaic are simply at the top you can see all around. If possible, my recommendation is to have a guide to have an experience which will be unforgettable. Understanding the history behind the mosaic will help you to deeply realize what Ravenna was in the past.... More

This place has the history and a good selection of mosaics. It is said to reflect more closely the Arian faith the prevailed in Ravenna for a time around 400 AD retook control of before the Romans retook control of the city. If you have the time it would be number 4 on my list but there are better.

After I got lost on my last day in Ravenna, I finally found this small gem. It was a pity it was closed for renovation so I couldn't see what's so special on the inside.

We went here as it was one of the 5 attractions listed on our bulk entrance ticket and we blown away by what we saw. The mosaics are exquisite and so colourful for such an age. The photos give you a hint but are no substitute for being there. If pushed for time make sure you choose this in preference... More
