It consists of not just one Church but 7 religious dwellings, all in one location. Each dwelling has its own significance. An extremely quiet and spiritual setting away from the hustle and bustle of the main tourist areas. Well worth a visit.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Peter TTamworth, United Kingdom900 contributionsPretty set of historical church buildings and its free.....A really set of old church building blended together. Its free (with a donation), has a museum and shop so definitely worth a visit. Its set in a pretty and small piazza. Check timings for entrance as part of it is a working church. Spend the time (1-2 hours) to walk around and take in the history, plus enjoy a coffee in the lovely piazza - before or after.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 February 2024
- BradHong Kong, China176,235 contributionsSeven historic churches clustering up to form a single basilicaThis is a complex of seven historic churches from various eras, dating back to around the 5th century that cluster into a single basilica at Piazza Santo Stefano. There are various architectural buildings, medieval structures, chapels and cloister that make up the complex. Quite a few points of interest, artworks throughout. You can visit a small museum with old artworks and will find a little gift shop if you want to pick someone up to remember your visit. On the whole, there are some very good church visits you can make in Bologan. Basilica Santo Stefano is one of them, well worth making time to visit when exploring the Piazza Santo Stefano area of the city centre of Bologna.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 March 2024
- MerrowmumGuildford, United Kingdom1,373 contributionsSeven churches in one! This is quite a special place - you will sense the devotion even if you are not religious, like me. Wandering through the various churches and chapels, all interlinked, you see a mixture of styles, ages and decoration. The little museum is worth popping into as well. Some of the artwork is beautiful and the architecture itself is fascinating.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 April 2024
- Kurt CMalta53 contributionsA must visit to the Sanctuary dedicated to Santo StefanoI really enjoyed the visit at the Sanctuary of Saint Stephen. It comprises of a multiple churches allocated next to each other dating back to medieval periods. The sanctuary is still in good state. As a visit, it had too much to offer. Will surely recommend this free museum visit in Bologna.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024
- Martin W617 contributionsan absolute highlight of BolognaThe Basilica and the Santuario Santo Stefano are beautiful. Each part of the building becomes more beautiful, right up to the cloisters. You can imagine Umberto Eco wandering around here and getting inspiration for his book The Name of the Rose, who knows. Much of the building structure seems to have been preserved. The area is very large and so you get a great impression of what monastic life may have been like in the past.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 August 2024

1,000 year old frescoes, beautiful art and a copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre from Jerusalem. What more could you want? Wander and wonder! If you come in the main, north facing entrance, go down the left side of the church and there's a door leading back to the incredible other churches in this complex. The Adoration of the Magi from 1290 is something special.

This externally unassuming Basilica is a must visit! Once you enter with a guide, your understanding of the history is enhanced. There is much to see, many sections to cover. Known as a complex of 7 churches, it even has a Courtyard of Pilate and a stone rooster. We were so glad we made the attempt to visit this Basilica. To have an in depth appreciation, one may need to revisit a few times- even the external brick design is fascinating.

The basilica of Santo Stefano encompasses a complex of religious buildings and courtyards, located on Piazza Santo Stefano. This was my favourite experience in Bologna we visited twice. Note it is closed from 12.30 - 2.30 for lunch. Entry is free. There's a wonderful shop/museum where you can buy artefacts made in Jerusalem, I bought a long sought after Olive wood nativity set. sette chiese / seven churches complex showcases the building of multiple religious buildings dating back to the 13th C. There's a real sense of time here, allow a few hours to take it all in. You can get a guide in different languages inside for 1 Euro.

I had visited this place before, but then it was closed, but on this occasion it was open and we could see it (almost) all from within, and what a "trip" it was. Travelling through almost 2000 years of church life through this fabulous arcihtecture was a stunning experience and never to be forgotten. Highly recommended for history buffs.

It is one of the most important places to visit, see and spend time in Bologna. The basilica, built in the 5th century and made up of 7 churches, is one of the oldest structures in Bologna. Surrounded by many restaurants and cafes, it is in a quiet area. I was very impressed by the buildings, decorations and historical artifacts in the museum section. The basilica is closed on Mondays.

In my opinion apart from the porch to and from San Luca is the most beautiful thing seen in Bologna.
The Basilica of Santo Stefano, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting places in Bologna.
The structure has the charm of the lived, you can perceive the time spent, the beautiful / curious thing is its appearance, apparently messy, which attracts even more the attention of those who visit this particular sanctuary, is so extravagant, to have more names: Saint Stephen, the seven churches, Holy Jerusalem.
Actually there are not seven churches, but more than ten, a nice walk through rooms and cloisters. Remember to leave an offer.

This is a really interesting structure with a series of churches of different ages interconnected. There was a nice display that helps put the pieces together and each area was a visual treat. They also have a really nice shop. Highly recommend!

Are there tour guides available in English? Thank you.
Written 18 February 2019
I am sure that the tourist office in Piazza Grande would be able to book an English speaking guide for you. They are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and also issue the Bologna Card Museo which I would strongly recommend if you are staying for a week or more

Disculpa,Pablo, pero creo que estás confundiendo la Basílica de Santo Stéfano con la de San Petronio. Carlos V fue coronado en San Petronio, frente a la Plazza Maggiore. San Petronio es la que tiene la fachada inconclusa.
