Happened to catch a patron saint procession. Great place to sit and have a refreshing drink and people watch.

Bologna is really a lovely city, very old but at the same time so much alive with the young students and many tourists. The Piazza Maggiore is the heart of the city, vibrant with many restaurants, bars and stores. The place itself is amazing, the layout of the 15th century, the buildings surrounding it and the Basilica di San Petronio... More

Piazza Maggiore is right in the center of medieval Bologna. The surrounding buildings are in good condition. Lots of tourists and locals.

This square is amazing, it is huge! Lots to see there, including the great imposing basilica. Lots of people hanging out in the many cafes just people watching. There are lots of little streets off the square which are great for cafes and shopping. .

Great focal point for Bologna - lively and entertaining. You will visit many times whilst in Bologna - with hop on/off buses and trains. A great place for a drink and to watch the word go by!

You mustn't visit Bologna without paying a visit to it's heart. Lovely place to just sit and watch the city.

Liked the area very much. Was disappointed that the Neptune fountain was closed for renovation. If you want something different Bologna is more of a medieval city. The tourist center was very helpful. I made use of the 48 hour pass (Welcome Bologna) to explore the city. It has a vast assortment of museums and churches to see. The Welcome... More

I think that most visitors will experience an intake of breath when rounding a corner to find laid before them a magnificent square. I was fortunate to see it empty, then full of community dancers and then a market. Surrounded by cafes it's a place to wile away some downtime.
