I usually stay close to Piazza Maggiore and no matter how many times I walk by it, there is something new to notice each time...it is one of Italy's best kept secrets, as is the whole city of Bologna. The first university town!
Walking distance to almost everything, spacious, busy (although less crowded with tourists than central places in Florence or Rome, for example) and just beautiful.

This is one beautiful piazza, with so many things to see within it, but also off into the side roads, amazing architecture that will astound, but for those new to the city, a grea place to use as a reference point.
