- rossaoEssex, United Kingdom43 contributionsGood Experience in BolognaMake sure you are fit and able if you are walking this, brilliant experience but god was i tired when i reached the top, only to have to get back down after! you can take a bus up to the top but part of the experience I feel is walking it. Lovely views of Bologna at the top. Toilets and a water the top.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 23 November 2023
- BradHong Kong, China175,773 contributionsRemarkable continuous portico from the city centre to San LucaThis is a roughly 3.5km long continuous stretch of portico arcade between the Saragozza Gate and the San Luca Sanctuary in the city of Bologna. It is considered the longest covered gallery in the world and along with the many km of porticos found with the city centre a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2021). It was constructed between 1674-1721 to provide covered passageway for pilgrims for their journey up to the sanctuary from the city. The first 1.5 km walk between Saragozza Gate and the Meloncello Arch is flat and easy. It follows alongside Via Saragozza. You will walk past quite a few eateries, bars, food shops along the way. After passing through Meloncello Arch, the next 2 km takes a more southwest route and ascent up to the sanctuary. The upward walk is gradual at times and fairly steep in certain sections, particularly as you near the San Luca. Allow plenty of a couple hours to walk up to San Luca from your hotel at least and take breaks along the way if needed. Have your water bottle ready as well. You will likely need it at some stage of the walk. As you climb elevation you will find nice views of the historic centre of Bologna and countryside to the south of the city.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 27 March 2024

- Martin W618 contributionsWonderfull trip and a lovely viewYou start directly at a city gate and can walk under the portico with dry feet or, like us, in the shade up to the monastery of San Luca. It goes up to 280 meters high and there are great panoramic views, no need for the sky experience. Once you get to the top you already have a great view of Bologna.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 July 2024

I would recommend taking a water bottle with you - there is a tap to refill at the top. The sides of the portico allows for refuge from the sun, and there are artworks along the way to stop and look at.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 August 2024

There are porticoes everywhere in Bologna so you can't miss any of them. However, if you're looking to see some that are extra special, then visit these ones. They stretch 2.5km and go up a steep incline which is why they're an extraordinary work of craftmanship. Not only that, they take you to San Luca Cathedral which is a must see on your visit here. Some of the incline is steep but flat but there are parts of it that involve steps too. It's much easier coming down as you could walk on the roadside - as I did - and take in the breathtaking views of the city and from the top, the countryside on the opposite side. You can also take a great view of Bologna football stadium too

What can I say...it's an experience to do.
For those who are believers it is a very suggestive route to get up to the Shrine.
I have also seen many athletes train, especially in the uphill section.
Then many foreign tourists and some Italian families...
We did all the way from via Zaragoza (indeed we started from the central station, to be precise 😉) and we loved it, although it is undoubtedly challenging.
We "chose" a very special day, rain and wet autumn weather, midweek. So, I assume, this spared us the weekend crowd, the Train and Bus Organized Trips, etc.
Unfortunately arrived on you could not see much of a panorama, it was very cloudy and bleak... but we enjoyed a visit of the quiet Sanctuary "among a few intimates", very suggestive.
I have never been there with the sun... but I would recommend an experience like ours, so with all those porches you do not take a drop of rain.😉👍

It is a unique experience and the view at the top is great. However, would highly recommend taking an Uber to the top, enjoy the church and views, then walk back down.
It is still quite a long walk with a combination of steps and sloped areas. All covered, but no facilities along the way.

Wonderful day up and down the longest portico in the world! Autumn Sunday, temperature around 12 degrees, a little mist prevented the beautiful clear view from the Sanctuary. However, a beautiful experience through the 666 arches, many tourists along the route and many athletes both running and cycling. In the lower part towards Porta Saragozza there are many little bars where you can appreciate the delicacies of Bologna.

We have visited Bologna three times, but it wasn't until the last visit that we made the Portico walk. It was a 9-mile day all told, and unforgettable. My only advice, is to start early because by the time you make it back down the hill, the restaurants may be closed for the afternoon nap (il pisolino pomeridiano).

Where in bologna centre do I catch the bus to the start of the portico?
Written 29 November 2018
It is near the city hall. If you have trouble finding it, check with Tourist Information, which is in the same piazza as the city hall. They will direct you to the bus stop
