The most beautiful work inside St. Peter's Cathedral is Michelangelo's famous La Pietà, considered by many to be the most moving piece of sculpture ever created.

Another Michelangelo work that requires undivided attention. When you stand here you stand in the eternities as Mother grieves over Son.

This piece by Michelangelo is both hauntingly beautiful and moving and for me the highlight of the visit. Even when viewed behind bullet proof glass it is incredible. Sadly most people just want to take a photo on their phone and move on. They only...More

One of the world's greatest sculptures. Developed by Michelangelo. Carved from one block of marble. It is the only sculpture he ever signed. Did so because some Romans where acknowledging work done by others as Michelangelo's.....

Its beautiful and regretfully behind glass but comes through in its beauty nonetheless. The main attraction of the Basilica which otherwise is a fairly un-ornate place surprisingly.

Locked away behind Perspex, the work was rather distant and unapproacheable. I rather prefer the unfinished Pieta in the Florence Academy with its much stronger pathos.

It's behind glass and you can only see the front of the sculpture. What good is that? And of course there's a crowd in front of it and stupid people taking selfies in front of this masterpiece like it's a Disney character

The Vatican Museum has a smaller replica for better viewing. The actual massive sculpture is in the St. Peter's Basilica protected by a glass barrier.

No image of this pre-eminent example of Renaissance art by the great Michelangelo does it real justice. It has to be seen to be believed. I used You-tube instead of an audio-guide for the background intro etc and that was more than adequate.
