you cannot visit the church / basilica without visiting the square. The square is a high security area nowadays. Security is similar to boarding a plane. Once you are on the square, you can enter the basilica, which everyone does, and admire the view. The square itself is beautiful, so are the fountains and the view of the basilica. A... More

It's a great, exciting space but I was disappointed by all the fencing. Do they leave it up all the time? We walked up and back on the Via della Conciliazione because of the great view looking toward St. Peter's Square from the distance. You can walk the Via della Conciliazione all the way to San Angelo Castle too. .

Very beautiful square! Loved visiting even though my family is not Catholic. Many places to shoot pictures and imagine your favorite movies taking place here. This is a must-see locale for anyone on this planet!

When we first arrived, the piazza was closed for the blessing of newlyweds but we decided to wait and lucky we did. Got to see the Pope come out of the cathedral which was pretty exciting. That said, the architecture and history here are overwhelming. Best to do some research on the history ahead of time so you know what... More

Last time when I was here - two years ago it was an amazing place for everyone. Now is nothing they fenced it, they filled it with separators, they made it comercial instead of a place to have your heart anf soul filled with joy. In top of everything- they hired very rude guardians. Anything you do is a chance... More

At the end of our visit to Vatican City we had the opportunity to see the magnificent St. Peter's Square. Is a good view for photos with best background the St. Peter's basilica.

Crowds gone and all lit up. What a sight. Everything in England is rather small & pales into insignificance next to Rome

It is lovely at night when it is lit. You can look as the massive space and imagine crowds of people listening to the pope.
