About
Woods, paths, ancient vestiges, natural caves, the Aniene engulfed in the rock and a spectacular waterfall: all this not far from Rome in a park built by Pope Gregory XVI in the first half of the nineteenth century. Entrusted since 2002 in concession to FAI by the State Property Agency Woods, trails, ancient ruins, natural caves, a river swallowed by the rocks and a spectacular waterfall: all of this just a stone's throw from Rome, in a park commissioned by Pope Gregory XVI in the early 19th century.

This breathtaking park is known for its stunning landscapes, a meandering river, and dramatic waterfalls. It's a place of both natural beauty and historical significance, offering visitors a unique blend of nature and culture. Natural Beauty: Villa Gregoriana is set in a deep gorge formed by the Aniene River, with lush vegetation covering its steep cliffs and rock formations. The park's beauty is characterized by its rich, diverse flora and fauna. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of plant species, including mosses, ferns, and various types of trees, creating a picturesque and serene atmosphere. Dramatic Waterfalls: One of the most renowned features of Villa Gregoriana is its waterfalls. These cascades are not just a sight to behold; they also play a significant role in the park's history. The most famous of these waterfalls is the "Cascata Grande" or the "Great Waterfall." This majestic waterfall plunges dramatically into a deep pool, creating a stunning and dramatic natural spectacle. Historical Significance: Villa Gregoriana has historical significance as well. It was originally established in the 19th century as a result of efforts to mitigate the flooding of the Aniene River in Tivoli, which had been a recurring problem for centuries. The French architect Charles Percier was instrumental in designing the park's structures. The park was named after Pope Gregory XVI, who initiated the project. Visitors can explore various paths, bridges, and tunnels that were built as part of this flood-control endeavor. Famous Visitors: Over the years, Villa Gregoriana has attracted notable visitors, including the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the English Romantic poet Lord Byron. Goethe, in particular, was deeply inspired by the park's natural beauty and featured it in his Italian Journey, where he documented his travels in Italy. The park's dramatic landscape, particularly the Great Waterfall, is believed to have served as an inspiration for Dante's vivid descriptions of the turbulent and terrifying landscapes of Hell in "Inferno." Visiting Villa Gregoriana: When visiting Villa Gregoriana, it's a good idea to wear comfortable shoes for walking and exploring the trails. The park offers a variety of scenic viewpoints, paths, and picnic areas where you can relax and take in the views. Given its natural beauty and historical significance, it's an ideal destination for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone looking for a tranquil escape from the city.Visited October 2023Travelled on businessWritten 6 November 2023
- Anne GSheffield, United Kingdom87 contributionsLots of steps, to explore hidden pathsA gorge with waterfalls in Tivoli, in a woodland walk where the paths are steep in places, lots of steps. You can take various paths to explore each area, path signage could be better. There are caves and tunnels (kids would love it) but it's not for those who struggle with inclines or steps. We took about 2 hours to walk it, stopping to enjoy the views. (Nearby is Villa D'Este, the Italian gardens, we didn't go there, but that's very popular too) Bonus at Villa Gregoriana - National Trust members enter for free!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 May 2024
- dapper777Monaco66,073 contributionsA fantastic experience with nature and and beauty,Villa Gregoriana is an immense park in Tivoli, near Rome, whose management was granted to the FAI (Italian Enviroment Fund) by the Italian State and is the result of an important hydraulic engineering work whose objective was to contain the flooding of the Aniene river, a tributary river of the Tiber. Promoted by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832, from which it takes its name, once the water tunnels had been made and a waterfall had been created, the Pope decided to build a park around it, thus creating a new place where one could experience the relationship with nature and and beauty, that is to say "the nineteenth-century Romanticism". Its fame consecrated this place as a destination for nineteenth-century European travelers of the famed "Grand Tour" and a favorite subject of painting of the time. The place where the Temple of Vesta stands is called the Acropolis of Tivoli and is located at the end of the nature trail of Villa Gregoriana. In the same place, there is also another Temple, rectangular in shape, known as the Temple of the Sibyl or of Tiburnus, mythical founder of Tivoli. Actually according to current knowledge, it is controversial to which gods these temples were dedicated. They are comparatively well preserved and are easily accessible. At the same time, they are picturesquely placed in the landscape so that you can enjoy the wonderful views of them A dream and a must for the educated traveler! To access the Villa Gregoriana it is necessary to buy a ticket which can be purchased either at the entrance ticket office or online. The visit is very pleasant and also a little tiring due to the tortuous paths both downhill and uphill. The roar of the waterfalls of the river and the green and rocky spaces, the lake corners create visions and emotions that cannot be forgotten. It is advisable to wear very comfortable shoes with non-slip rubber soles. Highly recommended.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 6 May 2024

Parco Villa Gregoriana is an FAI site, it is a spectacular set of paths, woods, natural caves and ancient ruins, where nature, history, archeology and artifice blend perfectly. I recommend purchasing the combined ticket for Villa D'Este, Villa Gregoriana and the temple of Hercules Victor online, so you can save a little, visit the area and not waste time at the ticket offices. To visit the park it takes hours (it took us about 4 hours to cover the entire Valle dell'Inferno very calmly) and a great desire to walk in contact with nature, therefore it is advisable to go there in the spring/summer period and with comfortable shoes. We start from the Gregorian bridge, descend along the valley and climb up on the opposite side to the acropolis. Along the route there are bathrooms and fountains. We stop on the terrace next to the large waterfall, pass through the caves of Neptune and that of the Sirens and arrive at the acropolis. In the area, just a few steps away, there is a large paid car park (not very expensive) and at the exit, going towards the centre, it is possible to have lunch in one of the many restaurants present. It's a place to discover... enjoy your walk!

After the Villa d'Este and a picnic in the adjacent park, 10 minutes through the alleys of Tivoli to get to the Villa Gregoriana from the south side (entrance opposite the small gas pump and restaurant).
€10 for adults, free for 18 year olds and €3 for 15 year olds. Good explanations in English from the guides and we're off for 2 intense hours.
Not recommended for young children, strollers, cardiac patients, sandals, etc.
We see magnificent waterfalls, sumptuous viewpoints and incredible caches... you just have to go up, down, up, down... on slightly steep paths.
All over approximately 5 km.
But what happiness.

awesome experience. It has it all: the hiking on the slopes of the inferno valley alongsise the aniene river waterfall, te ancient ruins dating the roman time, the XiX century impressive engineering work, the guided tour.
The park is very well kept.
You sjould allow 1 hour for the whole trail.
I would recommen to pay 3 euro extra and get the guided tour accompanied by an experienced guide. the guide will share plenty of interesting historical details

Beautiful experience, hot cause we decided to go early to the opening at 9:00. Almost the entire route is in the shade. The staff is friendly and professional, you can buy a mini guide complete with map at a cost of 5 euros (which go to the FAI). Wear comfortable clothing suitable for a walk in the green and shoes without a smooth sole. You go up and down, but everyone in his step and taking all the breaks you want, to enjoy every glimpse. Arriving at the waterfall you would not want to leave for the freshness and beauty that pervade you.

When I went for a tour in this park, I didn't know what to expect: I admit that the main reason that pushed me to visit it was that for me and my wife, as FAI members, entry was free, and the need to keep my few days' holiday in Lazio low cost. But perhaps this was a good thing: without any expectations, at most I was thinking of something not too far from the nearby Villa d'Este. Instead, the Villa Gregoriana Park really bewitched me, and in a completely different way.
It is a place where the true owner is nature: for me, who among other things love the countryside, this is already a lot. It is true that this nature is partly tamed: there are walkways, some Roman ruins, some works of art scattered here and there, but above all the water is forced into waterfalls and holes in a partly artificial way. But it doesn't matter: the latter is the real protagonist of the park. Waterfalls, cascades, lakes are the real reason for the charm of the place, together with the forest that surrounds them. And this is what makes the Villa Gregoriana Park magnificent, something different that anyone should think about if they happen to be in Tivoli. Perhaps its only flaw is that it is a bit tiring to visit, but for those who don't have major physical problems a tour is still highly recommended, as far as I'm concerned!

Beautiful side trip from busy Rome. Get the full experience as a hike down to the bottom and exploring tunnels and such (takes 1-2 hrs and is a bit of a maze so make sure you take the map they give you) or simply have dinner at Ristorante Sibilla to get a nice view of some of the water falls and ruins. Paid parking area is close to the entrance and the entrance to the park costs €8. Very nice gift shop/book store at the end.

Visited here during a short visit in Tivoli, whilst visiting Rome with my husband.
Not bad for €17 2 adults and worth a visit, spectacular views, hidden caves, wonderful water falls, photos dont do this place justice you need to visit here whilst in Tivoli. Takes in total an hour, first part is basically heading downhill into the valley, once you reach here its all uphill and steep, loads of steps and were the caves are situated! Not the best for those who struggle with walking or hills.
Tivoli is such a beautiful town as well if your looking for the proper italian feel and food! Well worth a visit if you visiting Rome as only an hour train ride away! Plenty other places to visit in Tivoli also including Villa D'Este!!!

A wonderful park, several steps with salts go down but it is worth going down to get to the natural waterfall. Place Do with well prepared girls who give important information. It is worth visiting but in the morning summer, many spaces are in the sun and the heat too much tires you. Visit in tranquility and relaxation in an hour and a half. Tickets can be made directly on the day of the visit. Recommended

A presto!
