About
Our stable is located in the heart of Ancient Rome, on the Appian Way and we are the only one allowed to organize horseback ride along the Queen of Road! You can reach our stable with a 20mins taxi from the Colosseum or also with public transport. If you love horses, nature and history, a walk on horseback along the spectacular Appian Way and surrounding Park will be an experience you will never forget. With expert guides and horsemen, Sandro Bernardini and Andrea, you will see archeological treasures, some of which would be difficult to reach except on horseback. Sandro’s family has been in the area for over a century and he is a knowledgable guide, well versed in history as well as local lore. With 20 years of experience in equestrian tourism, we have created itineraries for all tastes and levels of riding experience (including none!)

As the saying goes, "All roads lead to Rome." One of the most famous of these roads is the Appian Way. Having previously visited Rome, my teammate and I wanted to try something different this time. I searched online for recommended attractions in Rome and came across the option of horseback riding on the Appian Way, which sounded intriguing. After conducting further research, I found a service called Riding Ancient Rome on Trip Advisor, which offers horse riding experiences on the Appian Way.

To ensure our plans were in order, I contacted the owner via email approximately three weeks in advance to confirm the details and payment method. Considering our limited riding experience, we opted for a 1-hour ride followed by a meal service for two adults. The total cost for two people was 195 euros, including tax.

The stable is located on the outskirts of Rome and can be reached by subway and bus. I recommend taking the public transportation as it is convenient. Unfortunately, we took a taxi and encountered difficulties in finding one, which almost caused us to be late for our appointment. However, we discovered the bus to be a much more convenient mode of transportation when we returned.

Upon arrival, we were assigned staff members from the stable who assisted us throughout the riding process, as we were new to horseback riding. Riding on a horse made me (155cm) feel quite tall, hahahahaha. Along the way, we encountered well-preserved ruins and received informative explanations. The staff even shared some interesting gossip about the new building next to the Appian Way, which is rumored to have been purchased by the owner of an Italian supermarket chain.

For lunch, we were treated to a homemade meal prepared by Irma, the kind sister of the stable owner. The pasta she made was possibly the best I've ever had in Rome. Its delicious taste and obvious handcrafted quality made it a standout. However, the true culinary highlight was the baked potatoes. They were, without a doubt, the most delicious food I have ever tasted! I was not particularly fond of rosemary, but its addition to the baked potatoes was just perfect. I would highly recommend visiting for the lunch alone.

We visited many places while in Rome and this was the top favorite! The family farm is beautiful and the family that lives there is very warm and inviting. The horse ride was amazing and our guide was great at explaining the history of the area. We booked lunch after the horseback riding and it was one of our favorite meals in Rome! The food was homemade and better than the meals we had at the restaurants. If you are visiting Rome this is a must do!

The staff were very accommodating with arranging the ride. The horses were very calm and gentle and obviously well cared for. This isn't a tour per se - the guides didn't tell us about the history of the road or what we were passing. But it was a lovely way to spend a couple hours in a very historical part of Rome. If you like horses, you will enjoy!

This was an absolutely fantastic tour. First of all, the tour is really authentic. The gentleman and his family has more than 100 years of living in their farm. They look after their horses so well. The horses are beautiful, well trained and so easy to control.
We did one hour sunset ride and wow, that was amazing. We rode the ancient Roman road “Appia”, still made of the basalt rock from Roman times, and the scenery was exceptional. The road is full of ancient monument, history of which the guide knows and explains so well along the way. You can also see Mount Vesuvius from distance. The road is full of natural beauty, with relaxing tweets from the birds along the way.
The hosts are brilliant, they are very welcoming and treat you like their family. Unfortunately we didn’t book the tour of having local meal with them, which we will do next time, but they have a farm where everything is organic, and you can enjoy home made food with them after the ride.
The price of the tour was very affordable and is fantastic value for money. We highly recommend this, and will certainly be back to do this again, with meal with family next time.

My daughter and her friend said this was the highlight of their trip to Italy. There were 4 in our party, 2 riders and 2 non-riders. Lorella was extremely helpful with email communications to accommodate us all. Two of us walked and two rode. The Appia Antica way is beautiful on or off horseback and a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of Rome. The horses are well cared for, and the staff lovely and friendly. We opted for the lunch. One of our party is lactose intolerant and we were asked the day before of any dietary requirements, so this was not a problem. The food was simple but delicious, served in a rustic dining room. I would highly recommend this trip.

This was one of our favorite excursions during our trip to Rome in late April. The hosts were wonderful and made us feel very welcome. They were responsive by email and answered several questions.

Our adult daughters both had previous wonderful experiences, so we felt comfortable booking. Our 75-year-old mom couldn’t ride, but she had a nice, relaxing time while waiting for us. The grounds are very beautiful.

We had zero riding experience, but didn’t have any issues at all. Two hosts took us on the tour; they walked and held on to the reins. They shared interesting tidbits about the Via Apia while gently guiding us along the way.

Afterward, we had the best meal we had in Rome. Be prepared for multiple dishes and an amazing dessert. The coffee was just right, too.

Our host even booked a taxi for us afterward, and we were picked up quite quickly.

Our whole family enjoyed our experience and would definitely book the excursion again.

I had a wonderful time! It was beautiful riding down the Appian way and learning about the different mausoleums and tombs along the way. Going off the roads and through the farms where we could trot, canter, and do a quick gallop up a hill was so much fun! I love being out in the open fields. Rock was a lovely horse, he was responsive and had a smooth trot and canter. I felt completely safe throughout the ride. My husband joined me for lunch last minute. The food was delicious! I loved the bruschetta, pasta, and eggplant. Please thank everyone for me. I would definitely recommend experiencing such a historic route on horseback!

This stable was accessible by public transport which made getting there easy. We did the 90 minutes ride and eat tour. It was so fun and Sandro spoke good English. The horses were well behaved and we got to see a lot of the Appia Antica. Recommend!

We had a wonderful two hour ride with Sandro and Lorella. Following the ride we had a delicious four course lunch in the shade.

Sandro and Lorella were ready when we got there with horses saddled and ready. Lunch was ready upon our return.

First lunch because there are so many great restaurants in Rome you can’t waste a meal. If this was a regular restaurant we would have gone back for dinner! It is worth the taxi ride for the meal alone. We ate in the shade under an ancient building and had two types of bruschetta, then pasta with tomato sauce followed by amazing chicken, potatoes and salad. Dessert was peach pie but we had gone too crazy for the entrees that we couldn’t find the room to try it - Our only regret of the day.

We rode as a family with our daughters aged 12 and 14. Our daughters are very good riders and my wife and I are okay. Our horses did exactly as asked - go slow, go fast, stop. Excellent well broke trail horses who know their job. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this experience for a beginner through advanced rider.

The countryside and Appian Way are spectacular. Plus the views of downtown Rome are outstanding. Both Sandro and Lorella gave us the history of the Appian Way and surrounding countryside.

As this attraction involves animals it’s important to mention the welfare of the horses. These horses are exceptionally well cared for. They are a good weight, have beautiful coats and are well shod. Tons of high quality feed (hay, grain and carrots) onsite as well, stable is clean and well organized. We are horse owners and would be very happy to board our horses with Sandro.

All in all this was an amazing experience and only 20min from our hotel in downtown Rome. Getting a taxi back was no issue at all as Sandro’s son ordered one for us and it arrived in under five minutes.

We did a 60 minute horse ride along the Appian Way at sunset. The information received before hand was clear and accurate. The horses were loved, experienced and very cared for. The guide was informative and interesting. His passion was for his horses and it showed. After the ride we ate a beautiful meal at the stables in front of a wooden fire. A very special experience all round. Thank you!
